Wheel spacers. Empty
PostSubject: Wheel spacers.    Wheel spacers. EmptyMon Jan 31, 2011 12:15 am

Was thinking about fitting a set of wheel spacers to the disco partly as I hate the way the wheels sit under the body and would they help with making it a little more stable in corners? Or would takeing of alloys and fitting a set off steel rims with different offset be better?

Just remember that the tread of the tyre has to be covered by body/wheel flare.

Pople argue for/against wheel spacers and bearing failure.

Simplest option might be rims with different offset.

You need to make sure that the wheels are not so far out that they prevent articulation by hitting the arches. If they do ....you will need a lift, or as 4x4overland says rims with an offset.

I would go with rims with an offset if needs must. I dislike spacers quite a lot.

I would not recommend spacers, something else to go wrong, and the main issue of bearings has already been mentioned. Many wheel spacers are fine for road use, but will not stand the loads imposed on them from heavily laden vehicles used to, or near their extremes offroad, and many spacer failures have been reported by off road users.

Don't even think of wheel spacers. They have been known to part company from the hub.

They were fitted to my RR Classic when I bought it. Have to say it's a standard suspension set-up with road tyres, so no problems with fouling the wheel arches even on full articulation off-road, but introduce off-road tyres and I reckon the lugs could well foul the arches. No problems wheel bearing-wise so far in 10,000 miles, but then again who knows what's going on underneath?

Me, now they are there I'm quite content to leave 'em in place, but you have to ask yourself why manufacturers don't fit them themselves, or, if they make road handling better, simply make the track of the axles an extra 6" wider! I'm a great believer in letting sleeping dogs lie, so unless I wanted more off-road capability (in which case you have to adapt the standard vehicle with a 2" body and/or suspension lift + off-road tyres of course), I wouldn't tamper.
