| I used to live in Essex myself ... spent 3 years living near Grays (Chafford Hundred), also spent a year living In Buckhurst Hill many many years ago. Thankfully I left before I picked up the accent and managed to keep my lovely Black Country accent | |

| What I don't get down here is 'grey pays n bercon' . My Mom's next door neighbour makes it for me when I go home to visit. My wife is just not convinced and thinks it's disgusting ... and she's Scottish and eats haggis | |

| Grey peas and bacon is a black country special. You may it by soaking what we call pigeon peas (the peas you used to shoot out of pea shooters as a kid - yellow split peas with the brown shells). Then boil the peas into a mush and add lumps of gammon ham, preferably smoked. Boil some more and when the ham is cooked serve with a chunk of fresh bread. Onions and seasoning is involved somewhere too It was a peasant factory worker and coal miner dish. The 'grey' name comes from the fact that the pea mush turns a nice shade of pigeon grey on cooking Bostin! And as you say, swill it down with a 'kipper tie', or a pint of Banks's Mild | |
