Mitsubishi Shogun Mk1

We bought this 20 year old Shogun for under £100 and drove it 3500 miles in 2 weeks from the UK to the Gambia via Morocco/Mauratania/ Sahara/Senegal.

Both my co-driver and myself ended up bying Pajero diesels after doing this trip (both fornerly Landymen)

Bargain!

Although I'm still into Range Rover Classics, I have changed my view on diesels after having bought a factory-fitted 200 Tdi. Previously it was V8's all the way, with LPG for economy of course. 18 mpg on half price LPG meant my 3.9 V8 was doing the equivilent of 36 mpg! The reason I altered my view is because this 200 Tdi was tuned by JE Engineering of Coventry, and now goes as fast as the 3.9! DoSen't sound as good though.

I used to have a 3.5 Classic on LPG - it really was a big boys toy

I now have a 4.6 v8 P38 not on LPG

I drove to Eurodisney in it last year and had 19.4mpg !!

It does have a nice note though

Testament to the fact that the Shogun/Pajero was originally designed with desert rallying in mind!

They are awsome vehicles, made even more so when you consider that they are/were "relatively" cheap compared to some other marques. I have to say that if I was looking for a "toy" as opposed to an everyday car, the Shogun/Pajero would be top of my list.......that was until it became obvious just how good the Terracan is....now you can get a vehicle just as good VERY cheaply and not very old either......just MY view though.

The Terracan is predominantly a MK II Shogun with Mercedes engine.

Yarp. Ere is one on ebay, Its way too much money but its different. Here Mk1's are epic, we had the old LWB, slow as hell but one Epic fishing wagon. Had some old Colway Mud Terrain tyres on it and it was epic in the mud.

Don't remind me of Mitsubishi's involvement in the Paris-Dakar Rally. Their boast in their roadside billboard and magazine advertising campaign of early 90's - "Mitsubishi, king off the road" - made me wanna spit!!! I tell you, give me ten all-wheel-drive service trucks following me across NW Africa and I'd be "king off the road".

The engine, gearbox and chassis all had seals attached to them at verification techniques (scrutineering), but apart from that everything else could be changed on the vehicle ... and often was ... every night! New suspension, new diffs or complete axles, new electronics, etc. fitted by a colossal team of mechanics to ensure their entries never dropped out of contention - all though the night while their well fed (their personal dishes prepared by their own chefs), showered and massaged drivers got a sound night's sleep.

And when I say they wern't allowed to swap the engine, gearbox or chassis, that didn't preclude them from renewing the entire externals and internals of an engine or gearbox, plus repair/renew large sections of chassis.

By way of example - when Ari Vatanen wrote off his Peugeot 405 on the Paris-Dakar Prologue Stage in the late 80's, Team Peugeot had it on the start line next day with a completely new front end. It really was like a brand new car!

Now I ask you, what chance do amateurs have?

I was having trouble with my Suzuki Jimny. I could not get the fishing rods inside it, and I did not like the idea of having one of those roof drain pipes.

So Ive just straight swapped it for a Mk1 Shogun. 2.5 diesel auto LWB, 150,000 miles, gold with tan leather interior. Slap some Muds on er and off I go....

Makes perfect sense. Then again you could have taken up pond-dipping, I believe that nets are far more transportable ... and you'd probably catch more!

Nets/Rods................... Grenades take up less space and have far better results apparently A friend of mine had mk1 Shogun great vehicle, hope it goes ok

Last time I saw a Mk.1 Pajero off-road ...

I looked at a couple of Pajero's but people wanted top money for some real sheds.
I don't doubt there off road credentials but it's Frontera all the way with me, cheap to buy easy to get parts and easy to fix.
With it's Isuzu under pinnings and Vauxhall consumables it's a winner in my book.

Its done 155,000 Miles but it starts in a second.

Its savage on the road but is pretty strong.

Its 15 Years old but the electrics still work.

Its 2.5 is so underpowered but in the lower gears it keeps on hauling.

And Off road it keeps on going.

As long as it's been serviced regularly there's no reason not to do 250,000+ miles a mate of mine in Wales has the 2.8 it's done over 200,000 he's just had a bare metal respray in Ford STI orange it looks stunning better than it would have straight off the production line mind you he has spent shed loads of money modding it and having the inside re-trimmed

Interesting - I was just about to ask questions about the Shogun / Pajero as I've just been offered one

Its a 2.5 turbo intercooled 7 seater, been kept in a garage when not used, maintained by owner (truck mechanic) for the last 17 years (then grandson or garage as the guy is 86 now)

On 15 inch wheels - looks like it could take 16 inch wheels and the tyres are shot. Just been serviced.

Inside is worn in a couple of places - mainly the drivers seat but otherwise it is in very good condition

So anyone like to take a punt on a price for it. Its 22 years old (but has a private plate)

£250 Private. - With a full tank of diesel.

Shod with some nasty mudz its a good'un in the fields.

Have had mk2 Shoguns and Pajero's for the last 8 years from the 2.5swb to the 2.8lwb to my latest 1 a 3.0v6 swb blister arch version.

2.5 is ok but dont expect to much performance (much like a 200tdi disco)

2.8very good truck solid engine

3.0v6 Yahooooooo.... goes like poopie of a shovel and with the fuel economy of the derv but with many more smiles!!

Oh yeah the 2.5 on a auto box is hilarious on the road. Considering it goes about as fast as a Terracan in reverse, even if you load it up with gear and equipment is drives the same.
But is a simplistic vehicle, the transfer box is sound after 20 years, all axles and and gears work sweet. Even the rear LSD works fine up to a point.

Its one of those vehicles, pay £300 for it with 12 months tax and MOT, then when it fails next year, pay another £300 for another mk1.

And lets face it, the styling is old school Jap all the way.

Indeed, Ive seen mint condish, 1 owner Mk1 shoguns going for a nuts £2500. You could spend that much and buy it but there is no gaurentee that it wont explode and set you back £££££. At least with £300 if it dies you have saved your self £2200 if yo get what i mean.

Yep, saw a PAj on P plate a few weeks back in a garage near here; Didn't get to inspect it but it was a beauty......went for £4,350 with no tax! I think someone had more money than sense
