| Hello everyone
right so. i am 21 and completley new to travelling around the world by car. However i am considering driving from London to Cape town with 4 other friends.
this is probably completley crazy... yes. but please just give me some sesative advice.
how long would this journey take? could it be done enjoyably in 2.5 - 3 months? how much would it roughly cost overall? (i have not bought a vehicle or anything really yet) is it necessary to have someone on board with experience in car maintenance and mechanics, how much knowledge is necessary, why? on a scale of 1-10 how studid is this idea? (i will probably do it anyway but justr getting an idea what im in for) any other advice?
as much information as possible would be great
thanks

| It will take longer than you think.
It will cost more than you budget for.
On a scale of craziness of 1-10 its probably 11.
But, if you want to do it then go ahead and do it, enjoy it, and when anyone asks about it you can say you did it; thats the reason most of us are on here anyway.

| Hi and welcome, Just do it. Look at all the diferant motors people have on this forum, then go and look at them in the garages, imagine sitting in them with your friends for may be 6 months, maybe to get there, then if goming back doing the same again. Sort out among your friends who is ging to do the diferant task's, paperwork motor maintance cooking first aid, and all the other things I missed. It be fun and and enjotable, and as Assassin says you will be able to say you did it. So start now and get planning, am sure someone with more experiance than me will come along and give you more advice, also look at all the posts allready on this foru Good luck. | |

| Hi, Best advice I can offer is to get yourself and possible travel companions to some shows where the people with experience go to and pick some brains. Tom, the guy behind this forum is holding an overland travellers show 6-7th October and I know there will be lots of experienced people attending and display stands offering good products and advice. Go to the Travel section of the forum for further information, one last thing, make sure you are well prepared. | |

| thanks for all the advice so far guys, this is a great forum! anyone got any figures they can give me for cost and time? roaming man thinks 6 months. could it be done in 3? obviosly i would love to spend 6 doing it but dont think thats possible atm.
another question: how much experience in car maintenance and repair is needed? i know a few basics like, changing a wheel or changing oil or maybe changing a suspension spring and break pads. is this enough?
