Willys Meeting (Meet for 4x4 Campers and Overland Expedition Vehicles)

... at the end of August. It’s only 50 miles south of Cologne see edit above (approx. 250 miles from Dunkirk, 320 km from Rotterdam, sorry Tuggy – that’s a massive 2411 km from La Linea de la Conception in Spain) so it will be a nice little outing for my Range Rover-soon-to-be-camper.

Aha, you now have a choice of two shows in Germany! This one in Mendig new venue announced - see edit above 1st post of this thread (end of Aug/start of Sept) is much more laid back with all the overland type folk attending in campers from Toyotas and Land Rovers to Unimogs and big MAN trucks - it's more of a get-together rather than lines of trade stands, whilst the one in Bad Kissingen (June) is the direct opposite. It's far more commercial with 200+ trade stands/displays with everything from ATV's to racing trucks.

The quandary is, they are both good in their own ways. Put it this way, if they were similar I would attend just one, but because they are so different, I'm longing to go to both ... neither of which I have been to before by the way, heard great things about both though.

Im up for both its just getting time off work.
I will be able to give you a definite answer around March. Im also up for sharing vehicle & costs in that other trip you posted just got to see I i can get the time off.

Okay, I've made a decision. I will be attending:

Abenteuer & Allrad Adventure Wheel Show, Bad Kissingen, Germany (7-10 June 2012) - billed as "the biggest off-road show in Europe" it's located approx. 90 miles east of Frankfurt. This is a 'proper' 4x4 show with all the top traders present.

and

Willys Treffen (Internationales Fernreisemobiltreffen) Willy's Meeting [Meet for 4x4 Campers and Overland Expedition Vehicles] Bad Kreuznach, Germany (31 Oct - 2 Nov 2012) - approx. 37 miles southeast of Frankfurt. This is a much more laid back type of event, attended by some 700 'adventure travel' type vehicles from across Europe ... true overland enthusiasts!

Who is up for it? If we can get a convoy together for either OR both then great, or we could share costs in just one vehicle (Jas for instance???) OR I might just simply hop on a plane to Frankfurt then a train to the venues. Whatever happens, I need to promote my ADVENTURE OVERLAND SHOW so for obvious reasons I have to attend both events ... plus will attend as a Freelance 4x4 Journalist to get the events more publicity for 2013 anyway.

So much to do, so little time ...

Or maybe they are going to replumb my guts where it joins with my reconstructed bile duct, keeping getting fevers and infections, all due to cancer surgery a couple of years ago, hopefully this will fix it as I got a brand new passport 2.5 years ago and it aint been used in anger yet which is unheard of for me but travel insurance is interesting at present

Why, are The States more of a risk than elsewhere?

cost of medical care is the highest in the world by a factor of at least 2..........

thats why some policies can be bought worldwide excluding north america

Well, I stood the test of time and went through every one. Phew, you couldn't have done that before digital photography - not without spending a fortune in developing that is!

Most noticible for me was ...

The number of oldies there - the vehicles not the owners - then again?

The complete lack of aerodynamic bodywork on a lot of the trucks. You would have thought the amount of mileage a lot of them do, a basic sloping wind board over a cab would help enormously. By way of example;-

Also noticed a nest of Iveco 4x4s in amongst the monsters, bet you had a good chat with them. A great gathering of like-minded souls, I'll make it next year hopefully.

The blue one is designed like that so the cab can tilt forward. its a problem with alot of these trucks that they are big but without being able to put an overcab bed on easily you lose so much of the interior space to a fixed bed in a 4m box. Some of them don't have much more room than my Iveco yet weigh over twice as much

The 2nd one is a not as bad as it seems - its the biggest pop top i've ever seen - the whole top of the body lowers down

One of the Ivecos might be heading our way in October - may even come to Adventure Overland

Some great campers there all shapes and size's.

Now you've said it, I can see that it's a "pop top". What a great idea, makes perfect sense.
