Not expensive, very robust and you can get the free maps for it for much of the world:

Check out:

http://gpsmapsearch.com/

or

Olafs Maps: http://www.island-olaf.de/travel/marokko/gps.html

or Routable Open Street Maps:

http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

All very good, pretty accurate and free!!

Originally had a Tom Tom, didn't like to read out. Now have a Garmin Nuvi 255WT. Has it's oddball moments like most of 'em, but overall happy. Did the recce for Landy Rally last year with my mate - all 3, 500 miles of it though the Alps and Pyrenees - and he had the latest Tom Tom. For comparison we used both.

Gotta say his was better off-road, with many VERY minor off-road tracks and routes being shown where my Garmin was showing nowt! His also proved to be clearer on motorways when we had to branch off on a parallel motorway (mine was vague where his was clear and precise).

It seems to me at least, Tom Tom have upped their game so if I were to update today, I definitely know which one I would go for.

Hi All,

Your right Tom, the Tom tom really is a very good Sat Nav, I bought one some time ago whcih covers the US and Canada too and it's really very good. Great for the beaten track, but not so sure about the lesser populated areas (they do cover maps of Morocco now!).

If you want to go further afield then a Tom Tom is not for you.. the other alternative is a cheap netbook with something like Ozi Explorer to display and route the journey... (or the Gamin 60CSx or 60CS). There are alternatives but I'm not sure of the details for these.

We have Road Angel with memory map, able to track your route so you can go back again, although some times the route does not quite run along the road on the map, but near enough to follow. Also have a Tom Tom. cheers

PostSubject: Garmin gps and Butterflys !.   Basic gps what you got? EmptyWed Jul 20, 2011 9:18 pm

Hello to all,
I have a Garmin Oregon 450t. Lovely handheld GPS, powered by 2xAA batteries, micro sd card maps are easily available.

I use it for keeping a record of wildlife in my area (stick with me on this point).

Wanstead Flats, is a superb place to find some of our increasingly rare 57 species of Butterfly, compared to the estimated 2500 species of moth.

I photograph them and record the position (my other half things I am slowly cracking up).

Eventually I will find a place to mount the Garmin in my 110 Landy. idea

Ed

Welcome Ed. Not sure if it's the lepidoptery or the Landroverphobia (the fear of owning a vehicle that doesn't leak oil) is causing the cracks to appear. Just say to yourself ... "they don't understand", then go an pursue your hobby regardless.

As for SatNavs, as a virtual technophobe - no pun intended - I really couldn't comment! Wink
