Uk to Mongolia 2016 or 2017

Planning a trip to Mongolia, probably 2017, (when vehicle, work commitments and money are sorted)
Family of 3 travelling in our 101FC land rover.
Currently fishing for information so any advice would be very welcome.
In particular I have no experience of obtaining the correct visas, vehicle documentation, dealing with Russian border crossings, places to see on the way.
Interested to read other's experiences of travel in Mongolia.

That's one place I've yet to visit. I believe Roamingman was doing some research into that type of trip, hopefully he can point you in the right direction.

And don't anybody say EAST!!!

Incidentally Andrew, did you ever got to Morocco?

We were going to go to China, but it did not happen, so did not get very far with trying to get visa's but I think there might have been some one else on here a few years ago, so check out the proposed might still be there, may be another forum.

No, ha!
was going to go to Morocco next year as a taster, but, started reading travel journals and books and got more ambitious (over excited perhaps) and also it would have had to be in school summer holiday, i.e. chuffing hot (not so appealing). Chances are we go to Catalonia next year as a practice, where I can do some work in exchange for food / wine / siesta (so cheap), then year after that we can do 6 months or whatever, slow road to Mongolia and back.

sorry to hi-jack this topic, but we've just got back from morocco(entered and left 1st two weeks in august)
went in a 110 station wagon no air con it was hot but certainly not unbearable, family of 4 in the vehicle (kids 12 and 14 yrs old) got as far as tata but didn't venture in to the Sahara, we had always assumed it would be too hot in august but went for it and are glad we did

That's why we're heading somewhere cold & windy!

cold and windy....you will be needing the west coast of scotland in december then.......

Idea of going to Morocco for 4 weeks changed as I read more & more books / journals and worked on getting the truck ready & decided to more or less jump in at the deep end, step out of the comfort zone and just go. It's what I did in the mid 1990's and took a 90 to Iceland, best thing I ever did. So, wish us luck! From other people's accounts of travelling with children I'm fairly confident that our son will get a better, more rounded, education than school can offer. provided we don't kill each other somewhere east of Germany

In my head, yes.
but it will take 2 another 18 months to finish off my jobs and get the list of 'essential' jobs to do on the truck done.
tricky bit will be to keep up the momentum!

What's the status on the Mongolia-trip?  We are planning to go in 2019 (first save up some money and days off from work) and want to go at least as far as Kyrgizie, but we hope to further and reach Vladivostok. In that case we will cross Mongolia as well.
