What are your overland drive(s)

I hope to. It might even be another of the same. Due to the work of my wife she is eligible when we move to a new country for a duty free car each time. The problem is not all cars can be supplied and there are only a certain amount of companies that are affiliated with her work. So it does depend on what they can supply at the time we want it.
When I was after this one it was a toss up between this and a Nissan Patrol. This one worked out better and I'm very glad I got it.

i've a 300 tdi discovery which i'm currently trying to sort for overlanding.

What type of equipment you getting for the disco? Just a standard vehicle with sotrage of are you gunna fit all kinds of mods.

Plan is get it sorted mechanicallly full service, timing belt kit, water pump, new pipes maybe alloy header tank as standard plastic one are prone to cracking and causing engine till overheat, change all oils gearbox axles etc

When i'm happy with that i think i'll fit diff gaurds, sump steering gaurd with built in recovery points and a snorkel also a roof rack as i'm thinking on a roof tent.

I'm also toying with making a front and rear hd bumpers rock tree sliders a detachable tow bar tank protector also debateing weather or not till give a 2" lift or not either way i'm changeing the springs for new ones it came with a set of std length koni heavy track shocks so i'm not sure to fit these wit std height springs or go for lift?

IMO i look to try to keep the vehicle as stadnard as possible, ive fitted mods to 4x4's in the past and had it fail, leaving me stuck or stranded. When this has happened ive not been far from home. Ive not yet done any serious overland stuff yet only touring. But im sure the Veterans on here will give you all the info.

My current truck doesn't have many mods just the usual; h/d 50mm lift, tyres, snorkel, storage and lots of equipment. 'If it aint broke dont fix it' eh.

Hope it all comes together good and drives fine. Keep us informed.

Red, if you are thinking of a roof tent you dont need a roof rack. Three roof bars wil cope.

Yeah and that mite be done for a while to save money although I am paricaled to the look of a big rack on the disco like the safety devices rack but these are rare and expensive I have seen copies for sale so I mite get one of these or I'll custom make my own.
Although I'm also thinking about an oz tent instead views on either would be welcome ps I would probably be looking a s/h roof tent.

hi we have oztent great bit of kit, wife didnot like the idea of going up and down a ladder in the night, we have a D3 with a R4 just fits inside, will not fit inside D1/2 so will need roof bars.

very nice tent.

... and check out those chairs, each one costs more than my entire tent! A simple double-skinned 3-man pop up, quick and easy, that's the way I like it.

S/H roof tents?? Good quality roof tents i.e. autohome/maggiolina range ones go on ebay for almost as much as new ones! Have seen people sell 2/3 year old Maggiolina tents sell for what they must of paid for them

Oz tents? Biggest cons for them are the packed size and the price. Again they hold their value very well. The Oz tents latest creation the Jet tent packs up to half the length of the standard Oz tent. Due to hit the UK shores shortly.

Just be careful of the el cheapo roof tents on ebay. Some are made from pvc canvas??? OK if you like sleeping in a plastic bag I suppose.

I am now a great fan of the Foxwing and that is not because I sell them!

Roof tents are ok if you are young with a strong bladder! Personally I don't like the idea of ladders when I fancy a pee at 3am. I prefer ground tents personally

My mate had a funnel and a long hose leading down to the deck. It was only because of excess alcohol partying at a 4x4 show that he needed a pee in the night at all. Worked for him, no harm at all.

In fact, once upon a time I purchased a brand new 'pee tube' at a military show - no, seriously! Stupid me didn't know what it was, just though the moulded rubber funnel and 3ft hose would be handy for filling containers. Found out later from an ex-squaddie that it was designed for an armoured vehicle, the idea being that when under gas attack the crew could simply unscrew the brass O-ringed bung at the bottom of the funnel and "let the water flow".
Glad it was new when I bought it as I had used it for drinking water before I found out!!!

Was just goin of what I was told elsewhere about s/h roof tent was good few pound too be saved I've checked on and off but never seen one on eBay maggiolina anyways.
I quite like the idea of a roof tent up of ground poss less sand inside? Seen the foxwing in mags looks good thought it was just a awning though? Big££? Do u think the oz tent would be good starter tent or other suggestions?

i have a standard d2 with AT tyres. It copes well of road. How ever for overlanding what mods are best.
I don't want to go mad.
I'm definetly going to add steering guard, strong bumpers. I have a metal on the front but found out last weekend I can't use them for jacking up.
i've got a roof rack and high lift jack.

do I need
split charge system.
diff guards
rock sliders

It would be good to see the other discos storage solutions

well it does what it says on the bag, 30 seconds to put up same to put down, so when you find your camping spot, park up get out bag and it is up, so if it is raining you don't get to wet, but then it could take about 5-10 minits to peg down, depending on ground hard or soft even rocky.

Chally on our Disco 2 we have a metal winch bumper (but no winch) and a metal rear bumper.

Nothing to do with overlanding or off road driving.

All to do with protecting our vehicle on the road around here.

About a week after geting the D2 drove through a local town, went home and got on the phone and ordered the on road protection kit for the D2

PS in certain parts around here red lights means go, keep left signs means go right and the pavement is the VIP lane for cars

As soon as the tent's up, just get you better half to sit in it. Doesn't need pegging down then - the tent, not Dilys!!

Be carefull of home made racks, and Ebay shed builds, the roof racks take a real beating when overlanding, hours of corrugations will kill them.

One of the vehicles traveling with us had his rack fail while in North Africa. Causes some real problems, like, who has room to carry an other roof tent

I personaly like the Mitsubishi Delica. 2.8 oil burner on a auto trans = very nice and comfy. Ohh love the snow too.
