| I didn't realise you were going to the Spanish port via Portugal. Due to me being out of the country too much this year (insurance problems) I am now leaving a week after the show and just doing France, Andorra and Spain on my way down when are you looking at arriving in Algerciearas ? A big sorry to Ratrace didn't mean to hijack you're thread | |

| Bearing in mind it would cost £500+ driving up and down France, which we all know is knackering on you , your passengers and of course your vehicle (unless you can take your time of course - in which case it's great), then £664 is well worth the extra.
By the way ratrace, bit of a delay but tickets for AO`13 will on their way by end of the week. So much to do, so little time!

| Hi Those tracks are 'right up our street'------do you have any details on the position-Co-ords work very well with us------but any maps showing lanes anywhere in Portugal would be good for us We love Portugal and have driven to most areas------we only go in the winter so the South is quite attractive to us ----We have a camper so wild-camp-- mostly in mountains/desolate areas----but DO try to avoid the mobs of vans in the Algarve That empty road you showed was probably a new toll road !!! We plan to be in Sweden next Sept/Oct.--------That is the best Country to motor home in, in our opinion (in the Summer)---------Portugal is fantastic in the winter-----both Countries are soooo easy and relaxed to travel/camp in:) Nigel & Pamala | |

| I need to tell you that there are same restrictions in summer, from July till the end of September: Tracks and ways in forest areas are off limits due to fire risk - not only to 4x4s, but to everything (motor or no motor) that doesn´t belong to the officials (firefighters, police, etc) or local residents.
The authorities may close their eyes if you travel trough an already burned area.
The end of the restriction varies depending on the weather temperatures forecast. Usually is mid-september, but this year is expected to be at the end of september.
We offroaders start our season after september, also (or mainly) due to this.
Anyway, still plenty to see out of forest areas...

Portugal looks a loverly country to visit and I'm going to add at least a week there on my next European trip down south, what's the temperature like end of September and October would it be warm enough to camp, don't want to put the wife off and she doesn't do camping in the cold

(Pls note that I know, due to work issues, Namibia, Botswana, desert of Libia, Angola, Mozambique, Rumania and Kazakhstan out of paved roads) Here you have a several different kinds of sights in a day offroad driving distance, or in 3 hours by road! But, again, I might be suspect, because I love this country... In October, in coast areas you get a mild temperatures, a little harsher in the interior ( 5 to 15 Cdgree) Anyway, usually you can rent a bungalow on a campsite ( around 30€/night for 2 person) and you'll be ok. We usually go for a drive in a small group of 2, 3 or 4 cars, family spirit, and stay there. Cheaper than hotels and better (you can leave your muddy boots outside in the porch, and your LR in front of the door...) Our little group are planning to have a 5 days drive in December, from 25th to 31th -and finish with the New Year celebration- probably in Serra da Estrela. It will be a family oriented activity, with medium offroad difficulties. Anyone who wants to joint will be welcome It's not a commercial or organized tour, each one will support own costs. The only downsize of it will be the limited number of cars, in total: we don't want to go over 6-7 cars, either because of environmental issues and to avoid the requirement of legal authorization. When it will be confirmed and settled, I'll post it on the right spot. Cheers
