| Hi,
I am about to fit a Diesel/Water separator to my VW Syncro in preparation for a Morocco trip this time next year and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction of a decent supplier? It has an aftermarket 1.9 110hp electronic TDI if that helps or makes a difference.
Many thanks

| It already has one as part of your fuel filter, on the bottom there is a little drain tap or valve to drain any water out if the warning light comes on (if fitted) and its as simple as undoing it slightly until it drains, tighten it back up and bleed by opening the bleed valve and pumping.
If yours doesn't have one fitted such as someone replacing it with a non standard part you can get another filter which fits with one fitted.
If you are looking at serious water problems in diesel then look to the marine market as they use a seperate agglerometer and fuel filter, basically the units are two seperate units, or a two stage unit which is one common housing with the agglerometer fitted firts, then the fuel filter second; the fuel passes through the agglerometer first and seperates out the water, then through the filter to filter the diesel. Most manufacturers supply the marine markets so search their websites as yours should be a Bosch unit and they do marine versions..

| Yeh thats what I was after, a separator before it hits the fuel filter with a glass bulb type thing on the bottom so you can see whats in there. Mine does have the tap on the bottom of the standard fuel filter but some mates with a Syncro the same os mine did a 6 week Morocco tour a few years ago and did draw off quite a bit of water and also some bits of stick, god knows how it got in there through the fuel pipe but it did. Its just going to be an extra little thing to fit that can save me a day of hassle if the van starts playing up due to crappy fuel.
I just wondered if any of you guys used a particular company for that sort of thing, if not I will just hit google.

| Hit Google and look at Lucas, CAV, Stanadyne, Bosch and all the other offerings.
Main problems will be size, most boats have them fitted and mine has twin 1000 HP diesels which means mine are massive to meet the requirements of the engines, here lies the problem; size, you will be wanting the smallest units for marine use as these take up a lot of space which is fine in a boat engine room which are usually roomy, but on a vehicle its a different proposition as its got limited space and could be prone to impacts from debris being thrown at them.
You need to have your engine type, model, and size ready as they will have to match the flow requirement of the unit to the engine, so a technical contact within the company is necessary and one who is easily contacted by E-mail.

| Try Lancing Marine and speak to Mike Bellamy, they provide components for marinising anything from car, light commercial, truck, industrial, and tractor engines for marine boat use, they carry a range of components and their engineering advice rates among the best in the business. http://www.lancingmarine.com/index.html | |

| Can't top that. As it happens I had two secondhand units (just couldn't afford new ones) off trucks fitted to my Dakar Range Rover racer, because the locals have a tendency to water down the petrol for us gullible Europeans. Sorry, can't remember the make. As it happens, we never got bad fuel once, but you have to be prepared, V8's don't particularly like to run on water! | |
