Has anyone tried one of the American suv tents? They look like a good idea (a doorway that fits around the rear of a 4x4) and a normal entry so it can be used as a covered extension to the back of your truck.

Yeh seen them, awful expensive as are Caranexe tents, me and the wife like to keep it simple as you can see from our way of doing things: http://www.4x4overlandtravel.com/t1507-diy-camper-jeep
or here: http://www.4x4overlandtravel.com/t1522-diy-camper-jeep-part-two
New for this year is a Fishermans shelter attachment which we will post photo's of when we get back from Islay at midsummer, the Tarp will link the Jeep to the shelter where we can sit and enjoy an Aperitif in style, for a change!

The one I saw was £400 which is expensive for a tent but I have also considered a trailer and compared to that it's a very cheap option!

Yep pricey, for us the tarp was £17 the shelter £54 but you have to be a bit special to want to do it our way (that's special needs!) had to get that in before Tom did!
but hey we all do it differently because we all want different things from what we do, and that's what you will find on this forum, many different ways of finding freedom. no one way is the right way or the wrong way usually it's the best way each of us find to have fun. Enjoy....

They are also prone to leaking as they never seal properly, great in Australia when its warm, but not in the UK with our weather.

Hi
We imported (a different make) roof tent from OZ a few years ago and we used it A LOT in some horrendous weather---summer & winter and never had any problems with leaks-------we did get a wet bed once when we left a vent open in a massive storm  Sad Sad  we were concentrating on stopping our trade stand blowing away  pale Never any such fears with the tent  Very Happy  Very Happy ---------------so we know not all roof-tents leak Smile
