PostSubject: Transglobal Circumnavigation - aka "Going Overland"   Transglobal Circumnavigation - aka "Going Overland" EmptyFri Nov 16, 2012 4:25 am

Finally, got my act together and joined the forum!

We are Paul & Helen and we've been on the road just over two years now. Together we are the grand sounding Going Overland Transglobal Expedition.

Left the UK in June 2010, headed east through Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Russia again, Mongolia, Siberian Russia into RFE and shipped from Vladivostok to Seattle in October 2010. Gosh that seems such a long time ago now.

Tootled our way up to the Arctic Circle and then back down the western states of the US, Mexico, and all countries in Central America. Shipped round the Darian Gap October 2011, which also seems a long time ago now. Since been in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and now Chile, having spent three months of the UK summer back 'home' in the UK visiting family.

Arrived back in Chile in October. October seems to be a bit of an important month in our calendar!

Been moving a bit slow (stationary for the last five weeks) while carrying out major servicing, getting diesel tank repaired and doing bush mechanics on brake servo pump and steering box, both of which have been rebuilt in the dusty car park of Los Perales campsite in San Pedro de Atacama (as some forum members know having met us there), among other things.

Next main stop is our second antipodean point in southern Chile (part of our plan to complete a true circumnavigation overland), before heading off towards Africa and our final leg back to the UK.

Too many places to list as our favourites.

Our exploits and adventures are all on our blog on our website, which I can't post properly on my first post!

But I can - www.goingoverland.com Welcome BTW! cheers

Boy that's some challenge you've set yourselves! Found the 'Location' section interesting. Click on it and it just shows a satellite image of what are obviously mountains ... but where? It's only when you pan out that it becomes apparant where you are. Zooming in is also fascinating, as yes it begins with mountains, but when it becomes greener you actually realise you are 'in town' at the moment. It's incredible.

Is there a way of switching over to 'map' to see what town or area you're in?

If there is we've not found it yet!! It's the only thing I don't like about the map. If anyone with IT knowledge has any ideas on how this might be done, they will be appreciated.

And thank you everyone for the welcomes!

In case you've not seen our FB or blog updates - we were delighted to reach our second antipodal point a couple of weeks ago - which leaves us a handful of lines of longitude to cross, a second crossing of the equator and reaching our starting point ('home') to complete our circumnavigation - current time guess: about a year.

We love our Landy but he does require a bit of TLC from time to time - most recently a new clutch while we were in the Chilean Lake District - but with a seriously arthritic steering box, hitting a boulder thrown in our path by an oncoming grader which took out a wheel and a tyre, and a snapped rear axle (yup, that one sent us whizzing off the road into the brush as it snapped right on a bend in the road in Torres del Paine) he's up on blocks for some more serious medicine over the next few weeks.

Hi Paul & Helen,

We are glad you joined this forum, w'll dive into your website to learn from your experiences. We hope to start our overland adventure in Spring 2014 in Halifax, Canada. After a few years we hope to arrive in Patagonia.

Cheers, clinking teacups

What? Only a year to go, how we feel for you ... not!!!

Ouch, that wasn't good. Apart from hefty sump and steering guard (incl. a 'non-bendable' reinforced drag link), you really can't legislate for that ... in any 4x4. Just one of those things. Crying or Very sad
