Like the title says. Cheap, affordable camping pans, pots and cutlery. No need to spend ££££££££ on your first outing.

Morrison's
Tesco's
Sainsbury's

These all in Wiltshire and im assuming most of the UK offer a wide variety of cooking equipment and utensils. Morrison's offer excellent basic cooking pans and pots for £1 each. And a box of 4, compete knife, fork, spoon and plastic cups for £1.

Plates are also available, nothing fancy, plastic easy wash or you can always be super lazy and go with the paper plates.......

Unfortunately many of these pieces of equipment are exactly as stated, cheap; and from my own experiences they are not durable enough for the type of use and abuse they would suffer from travelling.

Its always been my experience that with cooking equipment you buy a decent quality set of equipment that will last for years without any trouble.

As it happens, I agree with Jas. The plastic plates 'n' stuff in Tescos for instance are really good, so will last quite a long time.

Yes you can spend a lot on gear that will quite literally last a lifetime, and that's fine, but plastics nowadays are so good in the big stores that you only have to spend a few pounds for gear that will last for years anyway (not weeks), and when they are out of fashion or worn out, get some new ones as it'll still only cost a few pounds.

I would however always get some decent utensils, for eating with crappy, brittle knives and forks are a nightmare. In this area I would always use proper steel utensils. May be different if I was backpacking where excess weight is important, but in 4x4 I wouldn't compromise.

They are not the best and will probably not live long, but for the money its a cheap way to set your self up in the beginning until you get an idea of what you want.

I agree with TJ - if it's to "set up" for very occassional use, I would go his route.

However, Assassin is right too. My stuff is a mixture gathered by shopping around. Plastic plates, cups etc, basic steel cutlery, a couple of GOOD kitchen knives for prepping. I found for the actual cooking, NOT worth buying the really cheap stuff. Saying that some of the really expensive stuff in the camping shops is pretty rubbish too. One of my favourites is a £2.99 half size wok which came from wilkinsons. You can cook almost anything in it, FAST,so using less gas. But everyone will really have their own preferences. TBH I'm just a happy using a couple of mess tins,ah, the good old days....

Plenty of stuff out there to choose from. The cast iron gear is probably the best but thats big money compared to this cheap gear.

Best pans I've ever seen is a copper one. A Friend of mine made one with a cast iron handle. Just the right size for a good tin of beans, soup or small stew. Lasted well, and heats up quick.

Excuse me, shouldn't that read ... "a good tin of beans and sausages"?

As it happens, I really like the really cheap (Smart Price) beans and sausages from Asda. Cost all of 35p and they're ace. Had ordinary beans on toast the other day and it wasn't half as good. Cheap can be good!

I like my wok, but many from major retailers are too thick, a wok should be steel, very thin to transfer heat quickly, and prepared by adding a little oil and heating it until it smokes and then adding chopped chives and cooking them until they blacken the inside, once this is done the wok is ready for use and won't corrode on the inside.

From this i think we can conclude that buying cheap is a way forwards for beginners, then replacing items with better quality equipment if they like our pastime could be the way forwards.

Thats the beauty of a forum where people enter into debate Tom.

Unfortunately many want arguments instead, and this is where this forum differs so much from many others.

We still got our ones we used on Landy Rally 08, and use them for all our offroad overnight stays.. at least 4 times a year for around 3 nights at a time. Cheap as chips but still fab...

and they all came from Tesco. The aluminium ones that fit into each other.

The aluminium ones that fit into each other, I bought a set of these 3 pans and the lid as a skillet, when I started driving HGV's all over Europe, still using them now, early Janury we had very very strong winds up here in N E Scotland, and we had a power cut, so out came the camping cooker and pans, thay are now 43 years young. clinking teacups

I rest my case, cheap doesn't always mean poor quality.

"Jason, shall we find out what a 7.62mm round does to a Rangie." The only 7.62 round I know is the price of drinks at the bar! cheers1
