| How does HID Lighting work? Will HID lighting throw out a brighter and longer beam? How many amps or watts does it use when compared to a standard 85watt or 100watt spot light? I am looking At PIAA, KC, LightForce. To go on the roof rack, im going to treat myself for xmas | |

| Very simply, basically it is a discharge system which utilises a transformer system to increase the 12 volt up to a voltage of around 400-600 volts on most systems, and uses this ballast to light a bulb which contains a gas, basically its similar to a flourescent tube and starter system. HiD systems typically use 40% less energy for a comparable light output than a halogen or other incandescent lamp, this ensures you get the same light output for less power consumption, and they are available in a variety of ratings for their output balance of light, therefore they are less yellow and more blue as they can match daylight very closely, and the human eye responds better to blue light than it does to yellow light.
Are they legal on a vehicle? no is the short answer if you intend to use them for headlights as they are not type approved or E marked for aftermarket fitting, for off road spot lights or working lights, fine.
Some dodgy sellers are working a subtle con on suspecting buyers, some are now aware of the E marking regulations and ask retailers if they are E marked and the dodgy dealers have purchased a stamp and are marking them with the regulation E mark to dupe these unsuspecting buyers. | |

| I'm sure you'll be aware, but just in case ... If the spots overhang the windscreen, you'll need to place a deflector plate between the spots and screen, otherwise it can be blinding in the cab as light deflects off the bonnet and dashboard. Basically, the old type of exterior sun visor you used to get on the Vauxhall Velox and the like would be perfect for the job. Old Series Land Rovers used to have them too. You can still get them for Yank Tanks apparently:- http://stores.ebay.co.uk/TRUCKMANPARTSINC/_i.html?_nkw=steel+sun+visor | |

| I have had lights on the top of my vehicle before and I cant recall a glare problem on the bonnet. It was on a pickup, and they were Piaa lights.
Ta tho, Ill look to maybe mount the lights 1 foot back from the roof edge, just incase.

| Prices are..............high..........
Out of interest has anyone used Piaa Ion Crystal or Lightforce Yellow filters?
Apart from the different colour or lens or bulb what benefit does a yellow light have over a white light?

| Its better in foggy conditions as it reduces the reflected glare back at the driver, but ideally the lights need to be mounted low down and not high up to be effective. | |
