Very lucky indeed. affraid affraid affraid

I once had the misfortune to be in a rollover when my mate was driving. Totally our fault for not wearing our harnesses - in a flat field one minute, in a hilly wood the next. My friend turned the wheel and rolled 1 1/2 times. Witnesses said they saw a yellow high vis jacket drop down underneath the vehicle and then pop back up again in mid-roll. I was wearing the hi-vis jacket and my mate had reached down and pulled me back into the Landy as I was about to fall out to be squished!!! I now regarded myself as living on 'borrowed time'.

The only time I've rolled was rallying in a Hillman Imp.
Last weekend in January 1980....
We crested a slight rise on ice and lost it. Going from third to top at 8,000 rpm. After hitting a solid verve we flew over a blackthorn hedge and barrel rolled twice.

The Imp was back out two weeks later with alli doors replacing the bent steel.

Pleased to hear the Imp was okay! Rolling Eyes

Ever noticed in rallying, the co-driver always comes off worse rather than the driver. Wonder why that is? scratch

A glance at last weekends Darlington and Stocktons Times shews a picture of a car on the Buttertubs pass after hitting the wire crash barrier and saying what a lucky escape.

Wen I was CoC of the Stocktonian Rally a Ripon crew managed to go off on Buttertubs in a shovit. Neither were hurt and the car was easily recovered, with a very long rope, to be out the following week.

While building up signatures to get our International Rally Licences to be able to compete in the Paris-Dakar, we also rallied a Mk. 2 Escort - amazingly the Shovit was more competitive! Not so good though when you're the co-driver and that tree is heading your way at a rate of knots. Thank gawd for side bars on roll cages!!! I dunno, the things we do in the name of 'fun'.

I didn't do forest events. A couple of single venue. My place was the tarmac in the lanes. Not lanes as we call them but the yellow roads on an OS map. Maybe a couple of whites included.. I still miss that driving in the dark

The 1980 Tour of Mull. The last of the one night rally up there. The next year they went to Friday and Saturday.

Road Rallies (Saturday nighters as we called them) were okay but the thrill of a Single or Multi Venue Stage Rally was hard to beat.

Whenever the Grand National horse race comes around I can roll out my favourite 'funny'. When folk are discussing the big race I will pipe up - "Aintree, pah! ... EASY. I've raced there".

Having stopped the conversation stone dead in amazement, every time the assembled throng will immediately start asking what Beecher's Brook is like, how tiring is it, when did I take part, etc., then I'll say - "No, I've never raced horses there, only cars!" As you'll probably be aware Gemini, there is a rally stage within the middle of the horse track. Fame for five seconds, that's me. Wink

Aintree
I've been to an F1 race there. The shark nosed Ferraris. Stirling Moss in a Ferguson IIRC. Jim Clark in a Lotus
Graham Hill in a BRM. Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren in a Cooper.
1961

Yes there used to be a Rallycross circuit there.

Never could get into a single venuse vent. Spent too much time sitting about. I would enjoy a nce road rally with long competitive sections where you had to concentrate for a long time.i

Now there's the difference ... concentration. More than five minutes and I'm stuffed! Smile

Wow, they were true stars of their day. Never actually knew there was a F1 circuit there. Same with me and Crystal Palace. The last Grand Prix was held in 1972, previous to that the likes of Jochen Rindt and Mike Hailwood raced there. Dangerous circuit though, hardly surprising it closed down. Happy days, especially as I knew where there was a hole in the fence.

That could have been the race Tom.....I mea it is a long time since I watched it on TV

Otly Motor Club used to run an event. Coleman Tyrs Rally. A Motoring News Event. Often refered to as the Otly Grand Prix. It was FAST believe me.I do have a trophy somewher from one running.

I built a nice Sunbeam from my Avenger.
Doing that event one running we were daylight dicing with a 1600Datsun. Kept catching each other at the start/ fiinish of a selective...
At the finish there's the Datsun crew, two Avenger crews and me. The Datsun drivers says to me.
"Nice 1600Sunbeam you have there "
Not a 1600 says me
"oh it's a 1700 is it ?"
Nope.
"well it's not a Brazillian is it " ?
NOPE...

"Bloody hell it's not a 1300 ?"
YEP.....

He couldn't believe it.
Then the Avenger drivers aske MPG rallying
About 20 or so I said
They were getting 10 and 11 mpg....

Just shews how you can still hqave fun in a small car.
