You do not use spot lights in fog, thats because they are fog lights, if they were spot or driving lights, and classed as such they would be illegal for numerous reasons.

1/ They are capable of being switched on with full and main beams, and sidelights.

2/ For type approval they would be illegal if they were spot or driving lights in European markets, and would not have been passed, and the vehicle not type approved.

3? I have spoken to the lighting designer for Ford, who is a good friend, and his original literature shows them as fog lights, not driving or spot lights.

4/ Companies such as Ford would not make such a basic error with a world market car, and if by some fluke they had, it would have been spotted.

Which all disproves your claim of them being spot lights, which incidentally means nothing as it is a generic term which is meaningless.

I remember a friend of mine following an RAC rally, when it was a rally and not a days treasure hunt in Wales telling me that he was struggling in fog on the road. Tony Pond came flying past with every light on.....

Depends on the fog for me. I actually prefer to drive on parking lights in fog. Illegal I know. Also in fog. If I catch anybody up I switch out my headlights or fog lights, that means the person in front isn't driving in his own shadow.

32mph??? That's ridiculous. There is a scale of bad driving, this is the bottom end of it and therefore should be treated as such. All this sort of thing does is alienate drivers, not to mention add fuel to the fire about "traffic police are only interested in filling their quota". Little wonder we think that. The courts too seem to be filling the coffers, stupid actions like nicking folk doing 32mph in a 30mph zone only confirms what we've been thinking for years.

On the other end of the scale, it makes me spit to see these idiots on "Police Camera Action" and suchlike lead the Old Bill on a merry dance chasing though residential areas, whack a couple of cars en route, reverse into squad cars injuring those pursuing, and when they are finally caught they are give some pathetic community order and banned for a couple of months. They should either be banged up, have a hefty fine imposed that they would be paying off for years to come, plus be banned for TWO years minimum.

Bring back the ducking stool, stocks, cat o'nine tails ... and of course hanging. Rant over!!!

Agree with that Tom, steal a few hundred pounds and you get 12 months in prison, steal a £35,000 car and you get a community order, total disparity. Owners still get the aggravation, huge hikes in premiums, possible conditions of insurance imposed, claims for injuries or damage against their insurance, etc etc etc, and the scrotes get away scot free.

You cannot be prosecuted for doing 32 in a 30 area as you have a tolerance of 10% on a vehicles speedometer (Construction & Use Regulations) so to be prosecuted you would have to be doing above 30 + 10% which is 33 MPH, so the lowest figure above this is actually 34 MPH before prosecution can occur.

They tried this with me in Nottingham, 32 in a 30 area, and apparently it was a no tolerance of speeding policy, i went to court and submitted my case and the case was thrown out due to the C&U regulations, and a legal precedent was set, basically it would be an unsafe conviction.

To a degree it depends what method was used to catch your friend, if it was a fixed speed camera, or a Police car they should deduct 12.5% off the actual speed, then use this lower figure for prosecution, this being the case then he was probably doing more than 32 MPH and they deducted the 12.5% to arrive at this lower figure.
Why do they deduct 12.5%? C&U regulations, if a speedo has to be within 10% accuracy they have to deduct more than 10% to ensure they have countered speedo inaccuracy.
