MT Tyres Poll

Ive started a poll for Mud Terrain or Maximum Traction tyres.
Mainly to compare what is the most commonly used tyres worldwide. Also It would be beneficial if the forum members posted their experiences good or bad with said brands to help any new or experienced 4x4 owner in choosing a new set of tyres.

For me it is the Cooper range every time, they offer the best compromises under all conditions, unlike many other premium brands they do not suffer as much when used on road which is the greatest benefit.
Cost is a major factor, when basing costs against other tyres which are more expensive, their longevity which is as good, or better than the major players, they win hands down every time.

Like most things they came recommended from a friend, although a little sceptical at first i tried them and found them to be the best all round tyre which outlasted the other premium brands, and i never have had a puncture with Coopers.

Im hearing lots about this tyre on other forums and 4x4 friends and they basicaly say the same thing. Excelent off road traction yet forgiving on road.

im running cooper STT,s on my disco,,and there excellent in mud or on road,,,good solid tyre strong side walls,,,,

The only Mud terrain tyre that i have owned are the Maxxis Buckshot Mudder, currently on my vehicle. For pure off roading they work well, mud, mud and more mud. They work well in fresh snow and perform average on hard packed snow and ice. The centre lugs are siped which helps grip in wet conditions on the road and on ice. Road handleing is good and the noise it tolerable at speeds above 50mph. For me the best thing is the price. £62 per corner of camskill. 245/75/15

Price is certainly a consideration. On my previous Rangie I ran Amazon Technics. They are a mud terrain tyre and great off-road, yet amazingly are still good on wet tarmac - plus very little road noise for an MT pattern and don't wear too badly. Best of all, they are cheap.

Step up in price and there is not much to choose between Cooper and BF Goodrich. Both very capable, both strong, both quality.

Incidentally, before they were even launched on to the world market, I was once asked to be the sole importer of Simex tyres in the UK, but declined as at the time I solely ran 4x4 shows, I didn't market products such as tyres or accessories.

I would throw Insa Turbo Sahara in there for Mud Terrains - they are superb!

BFG Mud KM2 all the way

Longest lasting, miles wise, and very very strong side wall. The KM2 has even better road manners than the old pattern.

Also the BFG has been redesigned for new EU rules so will be about for a while, I hear that cooper still have to do this.

But if you want pure mud then other tyres are better, but you can't have a tyre that does all.

have only ever had the old BFG KM1 so can't really comment on any others but they have performed very very well. The set I'm currently running have been on both my old 130 and now the 90 and weren't new when I bought the 130 and have done at least 40,000 miles with me if not more, most of that fully loaded on the 130 and a lot of it hard tarmac driving in between sites. They handle well on tarmac and grip well off road but are crap in snow. The only thing I've noticed is that as mine have aged, the rubber has started to harden so they are getting noisier now.

I own a set (5) of Maxxis Buckshot Mudders.

I bought them mainly because they were cheap. £62 per corner I recall.
Ive had them 6 months done 5,000 miles and they have been great. They replaced a set of General Grabber AT2's and i can say that the fuel return is better on the Mudders than the AT2's despite the agressive tread. I put this down to the tyre being thinner and taller, possibly lower rolling resistance and better for my gearing @ 60mph.

They provide great traction in the Mud, Wet Grass, Fresh Snow and quite good on the Road. The tyres have sipes which have helped when the road was wet. The tyres were poor on hard packed snow, sand (possibly due to my driving) and ice, but then what tyre is.

I generaly run the tyres around 35psi, below 30psi they tend to drag their heels and lower the vehicles mpg.

They have spent 85% of their life on the road with 15% off it. I am generay a cautious driver and not in a hurry to get anywere. And i feel for the money they are Great. The original tread depth was 24mm, this as droped down to 22mm. I hope to get 35-40,000 miles out of them.

The regulations you refer to are the noise regulations, Cooper were the first tyre company to comply with them, and certainly nearly 4 years before BFG complied, BFG initially had issues getting their tyres to comply, specifically the more off road and aggressively treaded tyres..
Cooper were followed by Good Year, then Michelin, and then by a host of other manufacturers who all used Coopers to model their own tyres to meet these emissions levels.

i have just ordered a set of 33x12.5x15 kumho KL71,s on 10" wide rims for my disco.. :shock: :shock: ..and a load of other stuff,,,,,plastic has just had a good hiding,,,,

That is a Large tyre. Give us some PICS when they arrive. Sounds great.

yea ok ,,the disco is getting a bit of a refurb,,as i have abused it this winter,,,,

BFG's on the 110
They last well and seem very strong, will be having the same again when they wear out.

If you're specifically asking about which mud tyre is the best, then for me it's a toss up between the Super Swamper IROK ...



and the Simex Extreme Trekker ...



Because of their aggresive walls, they can both climb out of ruts whereas most others in the list can't. If you're going to have a 'mud tyre' , then have a proper one!
