| ... if you buy a vehicle which you think still has X number of months of tax left on it, you can still get fined if you don't tax it yourself! Think we all know by now that the paper road tax disc was abolished last October, but what I didn't realise, and nor did a good few others it seems, is that vehicle excise duty is automatically cancelled if a car changes ownership – even if there is a valid disc in the window! | But to be honest, all the people who have been fined clearly didn't bother to learn how the new system works.... Take this example from that link: - Quote :
- But unbeknown to them, the DVLA had cancelled their tax discs when they swapped, as per its new rules. The couple were sent refunds of the tax they had paid, but admit they failed to read the letter in its entirety, assuming all was well. They say they received no warning letters from the DVLA telling them their cars were not taxed. One eventually did arrive, but only after a car had been towed.
So, they both recieved refunds of the car tax.... to start with, wouldn't that set alarm bells ringing in your head? Then they admit they didn't bother reading the letters..... These kind of people don't deserve to own a car! | |
