PostSubject: tyre choice question   tyre choice question EmptyWed Sep 24, 2014 8:18 pm

hi every body
I,ve been asked to help prep a 4x4 canter for gritter duty and possibley to be used for snow ploughing around the yard at work, and because i drive a 4x4 it been assumed by the non 4x4 driving management that i am the font of all knowledge, so the question is what tyres to spec for the vehicle, bearing in mind it needs to be road legal and still practical to use on the road and at present it on twin rear wheels, should it be converted to signal rear wheels

For this type of work you need road tyres, contrary to what people think driving in snow and ice is all about contact area and off road tyres just don't do it, also you require a softer rubber compound but not so soft as winter tyres as winter tyres are only designed to work below 7 degrees; in hotter months they just overheat and this is dangerous.

You can get extra wide rear wheels and single wheel conversion kits are available, but they are expensive and only tend to have one or two manufacturers making tyres in that size which makes them expensive, stick to twins and put slightly wider tyres on.

Done enough testing of them over the years, manufacturers have also done considerable testing and we all have the same conclusions so its pretty irrefutable.
