I remember Andy Hurst doing the opposite he had a massive vauxhall logo on the bonnet of his discovery.
He didn't get ridiculed too much.

Normal old BBC claptrap trying to sensationalise everything.
It's no big deal ok so its the hash capital of the local area but you just say no and they leave you alone, it was much more intimidating driving through the mountains in the early evening with people jumping out from behind bushes etc trying to sell you hash.

As you say Kevin "just say no"

I wouldn't mind having a look around Chefchouen town a bit more on this visit if we stop there.
I only really saw the campsite last time and a few streets on our way in and out of town oh and your shortcut Kevin avoiding a pile of dead goats ready for the bar b que.

Well, if we take an early morning ferry, get through Moroccan customs with no hassle, we could be in Chefchouen by midday (even with stopping to change money, get insurance). So would be no problem to have a wander through the medina in the afternoon. If we are delayed at all, we could do it on the return leg as well. Maybe find a nice restaurant for a dinner in town as well.

I have been working my way through preparing a series of sat images of our route, marking out key areas of terrain or road junctions we need to find. I will bring these along on Saturday to go through. I will probably get at least one set printed off as well. Some have lat/long grids on them in areas where that might help.

I will burn of a couple of CDs with all the maps/sat images. I would not want us to have too many printed copies though...might make customs/police/military nervous if we are travelling around with detailed satellite imagery in border areas.

On the Dakar nobody had decent maps of Libya, which in 1989 just happened to be the first country on the rally route in North Africa. Via a colleague (ex British military) I managed to get my sticky mits on the latest U.S. military satellite maps showing dunes, depressions, dried up wadis, the works!

Bearing in mind this wasn't long after U.S. warplanes had killed Gaddafi's son in a raid, I shudder to think what the implications would have been if we were found with them. Young and naive, that's all I can say!

Had a good planning meeting yesterday at the Doghouse. I will send out some informal minutes with the highlights on our email distribution list. We had a good look at the desert portion of the trip on the sat images as well...looks challenging! I think we have managed to take all the lessons learned from the first trip to make a better plan this time...while still leaving lots of room to get lost a bit and discover new things we couldn't have planned for.

Still 2.5 months to go, but getting excited....

Hi guys hope your all well.
I have finally got my annual leave sorted out at last! Now I have a bit of a dilemma regarding travel arrangements.
I'm currently trying to decide if to travel to the south of Spain with John and James using the ferry to Spain, or to leave on the 28th of March traveling though France and Spain spending the week exploreing the East Coast of Spain. On our last trip in 2013 was the first time I had been to main land Spain and I really liked it.
I have been looking at pros and cons eg extra milage on the truck etc... And I'm undecided at the moment. Was thinking of exploring andora, Barcelona then following the coast down to tarifa.
What do you think? Is it worth it?

Steve,
I looked at the two options earlier. Cost wise, they end up about the same...although you will be going further east, so fuel would be a bit more. I'd say exploring Spain would be worth it if you have the time. I imagine you could catch up with Ian & Jackie, Kevin & Dilys as well somewhere along the way. Gary, John and I will be doing Portugal on the way down.
Let us know what you decide

Hi Steve, I pretty much did the route your looking at down the east coast on the last trip it was really nice but tbh it is a bloody long way, I clocked over 1600 miles one way.

We skipped the big cities Barcelona, Valencia Malaga etc as they are just manic did drive through Valencia though that was enough.

We stopped in the south of Normandy first night then on to the midi Pyrenees stopping near Cahors then into Andorra off road into Spain stopping a a small town called Sort then crossed the Pyrenees on to the coast stopping in a small fishing village then followed the coast south like I said leapfrogging the big cities and staying in small ports and campsites right on the beaches lovely people very friendly great scenery.
Favourite place we stopped was Valez about 20k from Malaga, I would love to go back at some point but its just finding time far too much to see hence west coast and Portugal this trip.

If you fancy the east coast I have campsite details etc if you want them.
