| Hello all, we (2) are going to make a trip in July 2014 from The Netherlands to Genova, take the ferry to Sicily and travel overland back to The Netherlands. We will try to be as much off the tarmac as possible. We will travel with a well-prepared Land Cruiser HDJ80 and sleep in our rooftent, preferably at small agricampeggio's. If anyone wants to join parts of the journey and have some off-road fun, just let us know. Cheers, Dutch&Touch | |

| Welcome D&T! Have to say, I didn't realise you could catch a ferry from Genoa/Genova - Palermo. Not expensive either, the 21 hour voyage costing about £130. Great idea. | |

| Thanks, Tom. It will be a bit more expensive than £130, unless you travel alone in a mini car and stay on deck all night...! We will pay around €650 for the two of us, the car and a private cabin. Overland we would pay for diesel, toll, camping and the ferry between Italy and Sicily, summing up to €500. We will do that on our way back D&T | |

| Fair enough, a cabin would cost more. Although even with a cabin and a vehicle classed as a "motorhome" (no mention of a 4x4) then it would still be €170 less @ €480 I looked at www.aferry.co.uk if it helps. | |

We will post the quote on the forum when we have it, for future references.

| Yes, please do. It really is incredible how much ferry prices can fluctuate on the internet. The same can be said of planes and trains. Get a quote on one site and the next can be £100 / €100 different. Leave it for an hour, go back to exactly the same site, type in exactly the same times and destination, and it will be different again. Crazy! | |

A friend of mine who worked in the travel business for over 30 years once told me the flights/ hotel/ferry (online) bookings are governed by an algorithm that knows how much the break even point is and also knows the percentage profit the seller wants to return so the cost can vary after each transaction they can add a incentive package, you know the sort fly or cross for £1 etc which automatically then adds the difference to other bookings and the whole thing can be made time sensitive. So with a little work you can grab a bargain but usually there is only one winner | |

| Yep, make sense. It's happened too many times to be a coincidence. Ask around! | |
