I work as an insurance consultant and the best advice is buy a policy that suits what youll be doing for the coming twelve months - dont just buy the cheapest you can find online, make sure you tailor it to your own requirements so you dont come unstuck!
There is usually a limit to european cover of between 30-90 days per policy year, which can sometimes be increased for an extra cost, or after that limit expires you cover is reduced to the legal minimum limit in the country you are travelling in/through (ie UK would be third party only cover)
Similar with home insurance, usually between 30 and 60 days cover while your away/holidaying etc, but that time is generally reset every time you return home, so you could go a multiple 2/3 week trips per policy year. If you plan on going for longer, generally exclusions will apply and perhaps extra premium payable.
Visit a reputable independent broker, most towns have one, tell them what you want for the coming year, and theyll sourse exactly what you need.
