If you had 3 months to travel from the UK, overland, where would you do / what would you do?

As we get older we're planning on 2-3 months a year to go and 'explore'. We assume we could get as far down West Africa as Senegal or The Gambia and back. Morocco is a no brainer but I guess 1 month there would be enough? How about travelling out East - how far could we get, and back, in 3 months and enjoy the trip? Would shipping a vehicle to Halifax, Canada, by RORO be feasible?

2014, at the earliest, will be our first 3 monther. Need to make sure we have a bit more dosh behind us first Very Happy

Plenty of Baltic countries within reach of a 3 month 'excursion'.

Mongolia/Tibet/China, part of the world would be good, so shipping the vehicle out in advance is an option.

South Africa is also enticing, as is Australia, but I think hiring a vehicle is a better bet for both these countries.

Yes, we figured the same for SA and Oz. For SA to ship a vehicle safely (!) there and back is about £5k so any time up to 3 months it's worth just hiring. You also get the full hire company support Very Happy

We'd love to be able to ship to Singapore and do malaysia, thailand etc. Now that would be fun. Not sure what the cost of shipping there is. Need to find out. And the wifey fancies North America, so shipping to Halifax and driving down and doing some of the parks in the US is very appealing.

The world is tooooo big - too much we want to see Wink

Hi SafariDude,

In 3 months I would choose an overland trip to Turkey and Iran. You can do also Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Moldavia on your way back.
Iran has probably the most friendly inhabitants of all countries in the world. There is so much to see in Iran and Turkey. But you have to be invited into Iran to get a visa. Some visa offices can help you with that

To ship a vehicle anywhere for 3 months, I wouldn't do that, time is to short for that.

Happy trails, Rob

Yeah got to be Iran, I've heard so many really good stories of the friendliness of the people and the fantastic scenery.

Doing a 'warm up' holiday this year of a couple of weeks in France. Will get us a bit of practice with the kit and show us what we have/haven't thought about. Depending how work goes we should have longer next year for an extended excursion!

Have booked some nice camps and really looking forward to using the Oztent bounce

Still thinking about best way of carrying all the stuff and tent - either a Thule roof box that can hold the tent, our in the back of the car (at an angle the tent just fits) but then we have the issue off all the other kit becomes a missile if we have an accident. Will be investigating tie down hooks, straps etc next weekend. Really trying to excluded the roof box option if i can tongue

A basic cargo net strung up behind the driver/passenger seats solves everything ... well, almost everything. The only exception being poles or pointy things (a highly technical term) that are likely to spear you through the net, but most items will stay put with an elasticated cargo net in place.

Different for your vehicle of course, but with the seats folded down in the Rangie, all the food, clothes and so forth would live on the floor. Then on top of we would lay a tarp or similar waterproof sheet, then the wet or damp tent would lay on top to dry during the day, this simply secured by two bungees diagonally positioned in an X pattern. Nothing moved around all day, and if we did need to gain access to something at the bottom of the pile, unhooking a couple of bungees is a doodle.

'KISS' is the best policy.

I'm with you on the KISS principle!  Had a test pack today and all fits perfectly, so we're happy campers (or at least will be!) I can even keep the '40' seat up, so can keep the heavy kit behind this seat in the boot area Very Happy

Definitely the best way, keep it in at the back down low, obviously heavier to the bottom. I realise this sounds obvious but you'd be surprised how many will pack heavier stuff to the top, simply because it's the order they are handed stuff. When you're in a hurry, it can happen to all of us!

We loved southern Africa, and three months is sufficient time to get to know a country or two.

Hiring a vehicle for three months is a long time. I have heard mixed reports about the state of vehicle and equipment provided...

Have you looked into the cost of shipping to Namibia? You could then look at crossing to Dar and ship back to the UK from there. Having your own vehicle gives you a lot more flexibility.

I suppose it depends a lot on the time of year and the 'type' of terrain/country you are looking for----and how much want to spend !!----we spent two months in Norway/Sweden/Finland this year---------not Africa with 'safari parks', but Sweden is such a fantastic country to travel in----soo easy and cheap (compared to Norway!)-----for a bit of excitement you could travel through Russia to Europe to save the ferry back to Germany----in the same trip Latvia/Estonia/Poland-----three months would be just about enough to decide where you wanted to spend more time on a return trip (for us it's Sweden----going back next year, well that's the plan)

IMHO---USA/Canada are really good-----there is soo much to see-----but THREE months ? not really cost effective I think----(shipping your own vehicle----unless it's a motor-bike !).
We intend to go further East, but at the moment are happy with Sweden/Portugal/Maroc-------very easy places to travel in.
