PostSubject: What spares to take touring with a Series 3?   What spares to take touring with a Series 3? EmptyMon Jul 04, 2011 10:44 pm

I have an owner with a 1974 Series 3 Land Rover who was enquiring what spares he should take for a week's tour of the Pyrenees. I have answered thus:-

Spares: Whereas with a modern Land Rover or 4x4, spares will be readily available. With a Series 3, now that’s a little harder. Fortunately in Spain they produced the Santana version, so all is not lost, so it is completely up to you how far you want to go.

What are the essential components that would halt progress and might be difficult to find? Water pump, alternator, UJ for the props, contact breaker points if a 2¼ petrol motor … where do you stop? You will have European Breakdown Cover anyway, but to carry these spares would mean quick, easy repair at the roadside or at any local garage.

What else would you suggest oh wise ones?

Of course ... an alternator belt (doh!!!) and wheel bearings are also a good idea. Trying to think of things specific to a Series that's not compatible with a modern Landy. scratch

I hack about in a Series 3. Dont see the point in taking an alternator - virtually anything will fit - including defender ones, early-ish Range Rover ones (I run a 80A Range Rover alternator). Water pump...there is not much to go wrong tbh unless you are using a non-genuine one - id say it is better to just renew it if its old.

I take with me...and infact the spares box sits in the car all the time, so I never have to re-pack!
Set of plugs
Set of leads
Distributor cap
Rotor arm
Set of points (which is now going now because I have put an electric dissy in)
Quite a few Alternator belts (which are the same as defender etc ones, btw, which is what I always order for mine)
2 X Wheel Bearing Kits
3/4 Hub oil seals (genuine - do not fit Britpart etc ones)
2 X brake cylinders (one for each side)
2 X UJ
Oil filter and gasket
Air Filter
Gasket kit - which includes a top end kit, gaskets for drive flanges etc
Spare rad hoses
Because I have an overdrive, I take the 4th gear incase it dies, and I also take spares for the freewheel hubs)
1 X side light lens, 1 X rear light lens (which I might now ditch as I have light guards now)

For non specific series spares I take:
Fuses and electrical connectors and a few switches, bulbs, gaffa tape, relays, threaded rod (different sizes) with washers and bolts, silicon sealant, grease gun, jubilee clips and box of random assorted nuts bults washers and crap.

I take it you do not have much faith in the Series then!

My 101 came with overdrive fitted so I'm not sure how it all goes. I think it is slightly different to series but does it need to have the 4th gear fitted. Anything else. I have the cover, don't know what else it needs. Any help.

Yeah thats not quite what I meant, mine has 4th gear...but my spares have everything to put it back to "normal". Only reason why I take it with me is because its one of the few bits on the car which I do not have too much faith in...and have no intention of servicing it until it breaks! All my spares (and other things) fit into one box so its all good Smile

Rusty:

It was a tongue in cheek comment as i believe in each to their own.

Personally i do not like LR's as they have let me down too many times over many years, and my criteria for vehcicle selection are also governed by having a disabled other half, this means more comfort orientation rather than pure off road ability.

As i believe in each to their own, i have no issue with people having LR, but often take the opportunity to wind up friends who have them, and they break down, especially when they call my Shogun then ask me to tow them in with it, just a little banter of the unmalicious kind.

I thought as much Very Happy

I agree, it is each to their own when it comes to car selection - I have mine because I love driving a Series landie and to me adds to the challenge of it all. I know - some LR owners ca get quite touchy when anyone dares to suggest that another marque may be just as good or better in certain applications - I am not one of them! But I do like the simplicity of mine with no electronic management of any description.

One other aspect i have also noticed is that many series owners also combine them as classic vehicles, thus a classic vehicle which can offroad, perhaps a multi disciplined hobby.

I too find this attitude of a proportion of LR owners, and am also glad it is missing among LR owners on this site, and its all the better for it, concentrate on the hobby and not the means of transport.
