Tuggy, we have opted for one on our trip. I would have to go and look up the details (i.e. nudge hubby ... ) as I don't remember very much of the specifics. But I do remember that we opted for a prepaid Africa 300mins through Satellitephonestore in the US, which is valid for a year from when we activate it. I am not sure if it is a bit of a luxury or a necessity - but we have it anyways! Let me know if you'd like to me 'look up the details' rgds African GirlChild

| Hello tuggy, and all.
I have for several years owned the excellent "Thrane & Thrane "Mini M"
US government, Inmarsat, so total global coverage, it's old technology, but works perfectly, and has a superb solar panel charger for the battery.
I purchased my one 10yrs ago, and cost me with contract £900.
You can now pick up the "Mini M", on eBay, for a tube of smarties !.

I am not sure if it is a bit of a luxury or a necessity - but we have it anyways! What price security? I'd say it was money well spent ... at any price! "Tube of Smarties"

| I think the best way is to hire one rather than forking out a ton of dosh, unless you are doing long trips, regularly. | |

Makes perfect sense, especially the way technology is racing forward nowadays. Purchase one and the phone or even the entire system could be obsolete in no time at all; an expensive mistake to make.
