PostSubject: Decat td5 fail new mot regs??   Decat td5 fail new mot regs?? EmptyThu Feb 09, 2012 3:58 am

Trying to find out if my td5 will fail the new mot regs without the cat/particulate filter. I'd like to decat and do a straight through side exit exhaust but have read loads of conflicting advice about whether diesels are a fail or not. Anyone here know?? Whilst i would like to entertain the idea that i could "swap" them for the mot the reality is i cant really be bothered with the hassle. Any views??

I think it's about to come in. If you have removed your Cat or your EGR recirc valve, then it is quite likely it will now fail.

Not all td5s had cats, the early ones didn't need them the later ones (2003 onwards I think) did.

I'm not 100% sure of the facts here but this is what I have picked up in the landy mags and forums etc.

I don't know about the TD5, but My Terracan Had a sports exhaust, -2 silencers, Sports silencer and decat and it passed the MOT. Emissions were nominal in change. This was last June.

It seems they are cutting down on engine mods rather than emission. Plus emission for different year models can be different hence a cat on later td5 defenders but not on early ones

As of Jan THIS year;

If the vehicle was fitted with a "cat" when registered, it will have to be in place to pass.ie; TD5/2003 MUST have cat.

Interestingly, what year is the Teracan? It may well failnext time. And Chally is right- same applies to EGR valves!

So a lot of people are going to have to do a lot of "reverse" mods this year..... mad

2004, 2.9 Merc CRDI

At the moment It has STANDARD Hyundai system consisting of 2" pipe, 2x silencers and 1x catalyst converter. So I can get 35mpg figs.

But the most recent MOT pass was with a custom Powerflow exhaust, 2.5" SSteel, straight through with a small tip muffler/silencer. EGR is still on what ever that is.

The Powerflow exhaust was sold probably 6+ months ago on eBay because the Mpg went from 35 to 25mpg. Which turns out even thought it sounds cool Its like fuelling a Jaguar Sovereign 4.2 .

That is interesting because I have a "mate" with a Honda Civic type R who has removed the Cat and is now getting extra 4 to 5 mpg's. In theory you should actually get a tiny bit more without the Cat as you are basically removing yet another filter/restriction. maybe it's not the same with a diesel? dunno.

EGR is Exhaust Gasses Reburn valve. Most modern diesel engines now have some form of EGR. Has a similar (but less) effect to the turbo when originally invented. Basically this s one of the functions of many turbo's - to reburn exhaust gases as well as forcing air through under pressure. It was invented by SAAB to increase the distance that their jets could travel without adding masses of extra weight with more fuel. And very successful it was. Unfortunately now, many manufacturers fit turbos tuned to just deliver more power but if they are tuned properly, as they were designed, they give you much improved fuel consumption too. I had one of the early Saab 900 turbo's many years ago and it regularly did 40+ to the gallon which was amazing back then - and in those days I drove it quite hard too.

The new regulations are not about money, they are merely a response to the sudden fitment of a number of new systems to vehicles, and many are safety related. In years gone by the vehicles owners would simply remove a bulb from a defective systems warning lights, so look at the other side of the coin; if you were in someone else's vehicle and involved in an accident would you expect the safety systems such as airbags or seatbelt tensioners to work, or would you be happy being injured.

Likewise we could apply the same principles to buying a vehicle, its fitted with airbags, ABS, traction control, etc, etc, etc; you buy the vehicle only to find that when you need them they all fail because they are defective and someone has removed their warning lamp bulbs, and you are injured or killed because of this.

I agree on the safety aspects but an egr? can't see how thats going to help safety wise. Or are they just trying to minimise the modifications generally. Took my stripped out vw track car for an mot last week and got advisory on rear seat missing and some loose wiring under the dash. Fella said that they now check the boy racers and the speakers in the boot for trailing wires and such like.

On the motorway the fuel was slightly better, but for general driving, ECU re-map + Snorkel + Free flw air filter + exhaust upgrade = Land Rover fuel economy Laughing and thats not something I need at the moment.....

EGR valves,

Many take them off, but many simply blank them with a sunstantial blanking plate so you cannot see they have been modified unless they are stripped down; an MOT tester is not allowed to do this as its a visual inspection only.

You can blame Europe for this, their emissions regulations not only dictate the emissions levels while running, but now it has turned to emissions levels when the vehicle is started or its running while cold and warming up. Basically its compliance and the UK Government had no choice in this matter and saw these emissions as negliable as the majority of vehicles warm up quickly and run for miles; but were over ridden by the Euro legislation which seemingly is allowed to dictate what we do and VOSA and the UK Government can do nothing about it.

Unfortunately its not just car engines which suffer from overzealous Euro regulation, how many know there are limits on smoke emissions on start up for plant and equipment, industrial, and marine engines? yet these will start in a morning and run for hours, days, or even weeks at a time without stopping; but these often unelected Euro leaders have to do something to justify their massive taxpayer paid salaries, multiple homes in multiple countries, and massive expenses.

Just took my truck which is a 1977 Land Rover 101 for it's MOT. I'm pleased to tell you that it passed with no advisories.
Whilst I was there I asked a few questions. If you have a 14 pin trailer socket they have to test it. Most UK trucks I think have 7 not 14 so don't need testing. EGRs and things have to be in if it was factory fitted. Seats if they were designed to move have to move. Mine were built not moving so don't have to move. One that catches people out now is steering arm gaiters have to be intact.

The less gizmos on your truck. The less there is to test.

101's and old Rangies have got no worries on that score then, they were built before gizmos or gremlins had their 5 minutes of fame.
