ADVENTURE OVERLAND SHOW: 6-7 October 2012

It's here at last! The big outdoor event that I've been longing to organise for years has finally been launched ...

Entitled ADVENTURE OVERLAND it aims to span the entire overland and adventure travel scene from all-wheel-drive trucks to 4x4's, off-road dirt bikes to tourers, mountain bikes to tandems, adventure sports in the UK to treks, expeditions and explorations in far flung foreign lands.

It also incorporates an element that spans all of these forms of travel - bushcraft - something that has been neglected in the 4x4 market up until now; not any more!
In a nutshell, it's an event that has never been held before.  

The venue's excellent (somewhere new and fresh), the prices for day visitors, campers and traders are reasonable with advance-booking discounts ensuring everyone can afford to attend, the time of year is still acceptable for camping, and importantly, it doesn't clash with any other show.

This is right up my street. The past few years I have been going to various county shows & the Birmingham NEC Arena relating to camping, bushcraft and so on. It will be great to see it all in one area.

As it happens, this is a great time of the year to post on forums for folk tend to get bored stiff between Christmas and the New Year, so if you can think of any other forums you can place it on, your help would be appreciated. Try and place it in the EVENTS section. Sounds obvious I know, but if it appears in the everyday 'chat section' it quickly disappers off the page as new posts get added.

Also bear in mind that I need to get a crew together for ADVENTURE OVERLAND, both for staffing the "4x4 Overland Travel Forum" stand (if enough of us we can simply do this on a rota basis) and as Marshals/Officials. We'll doubtless talk about this anon as this is a lot more involved, but if anyone is interested in helping out then please PM me to register interest for either - or both.

For those I haven't met yet, doubtless we'll meet up at some show or other over the course of Spring or Summer, so we can discuss your role then over a beer or two. It's gotta be done!

Well, it's certainly heading in the right direction. Five trade stand bookings in so far, plus my own promotions of course, and another three about to book. Not bad seeing as though I haven't even contacted the traders yet - they have been contacting me! Must be doing something right.

hi tom,,,well just putting a callender together got quite a busy year ahead of me,,,i have two trips to morocco in march and april then im trying to get up to scandinavia for a couple of months ..june-july maybe august,,then across to the UK where i will leave the 101 fly home and return early october to do some networking at you party,, ,,err i mean very serious show,,,,,
then head back down hear mid oct,,,,,,so hope fully all goes to plan, ,,,should catch up with you all,,,,,,,,

That's great news. Will you require a pitch for a trade stand to promote your Moroccan tours, or do you just want to mill about and take in the sights?

What I shall do is add "Tugs 4x4" to the 'those attending' list on the www.adventureoverlandshow.com website anyway, for whatever you choses to do, we can promote your tours one way of another. You did me a big favour all those years ago when you became my Off-Road Course Manager at Weston Park International, so it's my turn to help you out.

I've kept this seperate as it's by way of an update for ADVENTURE OVERLAND:-

1. The show has acquired its first sponsor, and it's a prestigious one at that - Goodwich Limited. Like myself, David "Mr Winch" Bowyer has been around for yonks, and in that time has built himself a considerable reputation as the No. 1 winch expert in the UK. I'm delighted to have him on board, his credibility and promotional skills will prove a great asset for the event.

2. A Bushcraft Activity Area is about to be created. This too will be sponsored, more of this anon as I anticipate a new sponsor to come on board very soon.

3. The first truck-type display vehicle has just booked up - the first of many I hope! If you recall, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes receive free entry to ADVENTURE OVERLAND as a Display Vehicle. It's a ex-military DAF 4x4 expedition camper ... all home-built, just the ticket as the owner will also be around to answer question on his overland masterpiece ... well, at least his 'box on wheels'!

4. A new area will be created to house seminars/information talks/classes throughout the weekend. Not entirely sure yet as to what form these will take or even how long (probably 1hr-long sessions???) and what subject they will cover, but ideas so far include 'GPS Basics', 'Off-Road Recovery Techniques' and 'Navigation & Mapping'.

This leads on to two questions -

What subjects would you like to see covered?

and

Would you have the knowledge and speaking skills to host 2 x 1hr slots (one per day Sat & Sun) - alternatively somebody you know?

I intend to make ADVENTURE OVERLAND a really interesting event, both for show visitirs and for us enthusiasts who will be able to get a taste of what's happening within other disciplines of adventure travel such as motorcycles, trekking, bushcraft, moutain bikes, whatever!

Hi trouble, how yer doing mate? Of course, no Abingdon means you no longer have a last show of the season bash to go to now. Well you're most welcome, that's another party I'll have to attend! It's a hard life.

Seriously, I realise this will sound as if I'm pushing the show, but I really think this event is going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be very different from the standard fare, so it will certainly be interesting. Watch this space as I've still got a few surprises up my sleeve to compensate for the fact there will be no off-roading there (there are always byways around of course if anyone gets withdrawal symptoms) but the idea is there will be so much to see and do, folk won't get bored like at ordinary 4x4 shows.

Yep, it'll be great to have South Wales Pajero Owner's Club there!

The first 5,000 flyers for ADVENTURE OVERLAND and Pyrenees 4x4 Tours have been produced, although obviously there is no front or rear as they will get distributed at the same events. They are on 170gsm paper which is a good thickness (to me wafer-thin leaflets smack of cheapness, like something that would pop though your letterbox), the cost being £100 delivered.

Know of anyone who can produce these for less? If so I'd love to know as I will need more. Ta.
