Hi there!

I currently don't own a 4x4 as I am a poor student, however I am very interested in 4x4s and have been off-roading etc. One day I hope to do a 4x4 and off-road caravan expedition to the Alps of somewhere equally challenging.

Probably a jeep or japanese 4x4 when i can afford it. I like wranglers, they look good for when it gets tough. But initially I may get a jimny or similar small and affordable vehicle.

Sound theory.

Jimny would be a good place to start. Cheap to buy and reasonable to run. Insurance is not too bad either.

Wranglers do look cool and have a good strong transfer case and axles. The only down side is the high running cost. Engines are 2.5 petrol or the 4.0 daddy. Both are not very good on fuel, but the 4.0 will crawl over most stuff on tickover. If you can get the diesel engine like in the new shape then that would be alot more economical but your looking at ££££££.

Jap vehicles are good. So long as its serviced well. Most have independent front suspension which limits them off road when compared to live axles. Not the cheapest due to large equipment levels and sought after reliability.

Bring back the Musso mate. Laughing

2.9 oil burner, strong build, simple, will tow what ever you want, were ever. I know someone who had one.....

Yeah the jimny looks good and cheap to run plus reasonable insurance. Yup those mussos are pretty good 4x4s.

Am i right or totaly wrong, is the Musso same as Isizu (might also be wrong in that sppelling)
we had one withh 2.9 engine relly a great motor, did not like the motor when they put in the 3.o litre. clinking teacups

Im not sure if its the same.
I am pretty sure the Musso 2.9 oil burner was a Mercedes engine. The one that replaced it is in the Terracan.
Great truck, odd styling but a real road train.

Yes the 2.9 lump is the Merc unit, don't forget to look at the Korando as well it's a good alternative to the LR90 engine and drive train wise it's built to last not so sure about electrics and spares availability though, check them out on youtube

On a serious note, both Land Rovers and the Range Rover Classic are like giant Mechanno kits, so if if you have to mind the pennies you can do a lot of the work yourself, can buy new/used parts and accessories cheap, and generally add, adapt or restore your vehicle bit by bit as the funds allow. A lot harder to do that with Jeeps, although it is possible with some Jap 4x4's - such as the Suzuki SJ for instance.

Either way, welcome to the forum, hopefully you'll pick up some tips in here.
