A Little Light Hearted Quiz Empty
PostSubject: A Little Light Hearted Quiz   A Little Light Hearted Quiz EmptyThu Aug 18, 2011 12:30 pm

Many people think they know 4X4's, but how much do you really know.

1/ Daihatsu made the Fourtrak, but what two other names is this vehicle known as?

2/ Mitsubishi make the Shogun, what other two names is this known as?

3/ Land Rover make many specialised vehicles, but what unique feature did the Centaur have?

4/ Wolseley made the Mudlark, what was the same vehicle also called from another manufacturer?

5/ Steyr Daimler Puch are famous for their 4X4 vehicle expertise, but which Mercedes 4X4 did they design?

6/ Nissan are famous for their Patrol, but which Spanish company made earlier versions of this model, and refined and developed much of the technology in their current models?

7/ A famous Italian design company used the Daihatsu Fourtrak and Sportrak as a base for their own vehicles, what were these vehicles called?

8/ Which Spanish company made Land Rover and Suzuki vehicles under license using 80% Spanish components?

9/ Which company actually made the first true 4X4 vehicle which was available as a vehicle for sale to the general public, and was not a military vehicle or truck? This one may surprise you.

10/ Daihatsu have an excellent reputation for building tough off road vehicles, what year did they produce their first 4X4 vehicle?

As a little aside, which of the following vehicles are NOT manufacturers of off road vehicles? Which are, or were makers of true off roaders, and which are just figments of my imagination.

A.I.L

Autozavod Cesky Dub

Bajaj Tempo

Dangel

Dong A

Fargo

Hope

Jankel

Lambourghini

Lu AZ

Morattab

Otokar

Phooltas

Sbarro

SCAM

Tarpan Honker

Tempo

UAZ

URO

A Little Light Hearted Quiz Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Little Light Hearted Quiz   A Little Light Hearted Quiz EmptyFri Aug 19, 2011 1:53 pm

Honest answers, without the aid of Google ... Wink

1. Rocky (in SE Asia) and ?

2. Pajero around the world and Montero in Spain/ex-Spanish colonies, as Pajero means something rather naughty in Spanish.

3. A horse at the front! Well, to be precise, 130+ horses as it had a 3.5 V8 powerplant ... and the drive from a Scorpion tank at the back! Only 8 ever built, little wonder as it was bloody useless. It didn't have skid steer, so it had the turning circle of Titanic!

4. ?

5. Has to be the G-Wagen. Mercedes 'borrowed' four-whhel-drive technology from the Austrians, BMW did likewise from the Brummies at Lode Lane.

6. Santana?

7. ?

8. Definitely Santana.

9. A sheer guess - Model T Ford? I know there was an Austin Mini concept vehicle, but it never went into production. Oh I know (I think) - the 2CV.

10. I would guess around 1960.

A.I.L - ?

Autozavod Cesky Dub - ?

Bajaj Tempo - Never heard of this model, but know Tempo is/was a manufacturer - see below.

Dangel - French 4WD conversion specialists, particulary Pegueots.

Dong A - Korean vehicle manufacturer taken over by SsangYong.

Fargo - ?

Hope - ?

Jankel - Rotary engine manufacturer, so would guess they also produced 4x4 vehicle at sme point.

Lambourghini - The LM002. Saw two of these in Paris as entrants in the Paris-Dakar. Big heavy beasts similar in many ways to the Hummer, apparently they both sank to their haunches as soon as they hit the Sahran sand! Totally useless!!

Lu AZ - Ruskie 4x4, amphibious as well, built by Moskovitch (speeling probably wrong Very Happy ).

Morattab - ?

Otokar - Apart from their own models, this Turkish company builds Land Rovers under licence.

Phooltas - ?

Sbarro - ?

SCAM - A play on words? You talking about the Scamp firbreglass 4x4?

Tarpan Honker - ?

Tempo - German manufacturer of military vehicles during WWII. I knew this, but after answering all the questions I did Google Tempo to see their history and find some photos. Well I'll be, something I didn't know was that the Tempo 80" and 86" 4x4s were built using a rolling chassis from Land Rover, but attempts to continue production with the 88" and 109" models were not successful. You live and leearn! Scource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempo_(car)

UAZ - Ruskie utility military 4x4 - hard as nails!

URO - Another play on words? Think you mean the Portugese ARO 4x4s.

Somebody fill in the blanks!!! Good quiz BTW.

I'll ask you one - A saloon car from which manufacturer became the first ever Japanese car officially imported into Britain?

A Little Light Hearted Quiz Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Little Light Hearted Quiz   A Little Light Hearted Quiz EmptySun Aug 21, 2011 12:44 pm

The Answers:

The Fourtrak is also called the Rocky and Rugger.

The Shogun is also called the Pajero or Monterey.

Land Rover's Centaur was the only LR built half track which was sanctioned by the factory.

The Wolseley Mudlark was also the Austin Champ.

Steyr Daimler Puch designed (and built some) the Mercedes G Wagen

Spanish company Ebro built the Nissan Patrol, and did a lot of the design work for newer models.

Bertone used the Fourtrak as the base vehicle for their Bertone Freeclimber and Freeclimber2, they had redesigned grilles and BMW engines.

Santa Ana built Land Rover and Suzuki products under license, not Santana, they later changed their name to Santana.

Lauren and Klement built the worlds first non commercial or military 4X4 which was available to the public, it was 1904, L&K are better known as Skoda.

Daihatsu have built vehicles for many years, their first 4X4 was built in 1974, quite a latecomer given their reputation for solid and reliable 4X4's.

The second part was a trick set of questions as they are, or were genuine 4X4 builders.

AIL are an Israeli company building vehicles similar to LR, but with Jeep mechanicals, and still in production.

Autozavod Cesky Dub are a Czechoslovakian company originally formed for servicing Soviet military vehicles, but biuld their own vehicles, many under license, they include the LR Defender, and they re-engined many soviet produced vehicles with Peugeot and VM engines.

Bajaj Tempo are an Indian company building 4X4's for the Asian markets, they worked in partnership with Mercedes and use many of their components, they were bought out by the Tata group.

Dangel are a French company specialising in 4WD components and vehicle conversions, they also manufacture many French Peugeot and Citroen 4X4 vehicles with the authority of both companies.

Dong A are a Korean company now taken over by Ssang Yong, and more recently Daewoo.

Fargo are a French company producing 4x4 vehicles from Peugeot 106/Citroen Saxo mechanicals.

Hope are a Japanese company producing small 4X4's, they went into liquidation, but managed to sell the rights to their new vehicle to Suzuki, this was sold as the Suzuki Jimny.

Jankel are a British company, they converted luxury vehicles to 4X4 specifications, they were described as eccentric for chopping Rolls Royce and Bentley vehicles in half, lengthening them, and adding a hydraulic drive system to the front wheels to give four wheel drive.

Lambourghini are an Italian company who produced a military specification 4X4, this was the Cheetah, it was developed and spawned the LM 001, LMA, LM 002, and the LM004.

Lu Az are a company based in Russia and the Ukraine, they built a range of 4X4's and sold them as a kit of components for DIY enthusiasts to build their own vehicles, reliability was terrible.

Morattab are an Iranian company who began by building LR products, they began modifying them by fitting the better Mitsubishi engines, and now build clones of the Defender which comprise all Iranian components.

Otokar are a Turkish company who began by building buses, they moved onto building Deutz trucks, particularly military trucks, and Land Rovers for markets LR cannot sell to.

Phooltas are another Indian company specialising in Jeep lookalike products, they use the Indian built Perkins engines to power them.

Sbarro are a Swiss company who were renowned for their upmarket performance cars built to order, they built the Windhound and Windhawk 4X4 vehicles using a number of performance petrol engines from BMW, Jeep, and Mercedes, and diesels from Peugeot.

SCAM are an Italian company building specialised 4X4's, they use their own chassis, suspension, and 4WD systems, but use Iveco engines and cabs.

Tarpan Honker are a Polish company producing their own range of 4X4's, they built the Ssang Yong Musso and Korando when the factory could not produce sufficient numbers of them, and were eventually taken over by Daewoo for their military contracts.

Tempo are a German company building light vans and 4X4's, they were taken over by Hanomag, and eventually Daimler Benz.

UAZ are a Russian company who manufactured in every country in the former communist countries, they sourced components from other former soviet block vehicle manufacturers and asembled them into their own chassis, their market was mainly military vehicles, but they built civilian variants as well. They moved more towards civilian vehicles with the break up of the former soviet block and used a variety of components from Mercedes, Peugeot, and VM engines.

URO are a Spanish vehicle manufacturer specialising in light trucks for off road or military use, they blatently ripped off, or copied many other popular vehicles, the Hummer being the most popular, they use Iveco engines and transmissions in their own vehicles.

Tom:

To answer your question.

Yamaha officially imported their steam car in 1904.

The first officially imported petrol vehicle was the Tukuri in 1907.

Kwaishinda Motorcar works imported their DAT in 1911, they are the first importer of any current manufacturer as they evolved into Nissan.

The Scaate was imported in 1902, but it cannot be confirmed as an official import as no documentation survives to prove or disprove it as an official import as it was imported through Belgium.

A Little Light Hearted Quiz Empty
PostSubject: Re: A Little Light Hearted Quiz   A Little Light Hearted Quiz EmptyMon Aug 22, 2011 11:47 am

Interesting, although No. 1 has confused me.

1. I thought it was an Isuzu Monterey. Surely the Mitsubishi is the Montero?

Piccie: http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-694428.0.html

6. Ebro built the Nissan Patrol – darn, knew that.

8. Santa Ana built Land Rover and Suzuki products under license, not Santana, they later changed their name to Santana. Tricky! mad

As for the “the first Japanese car officially imported into Britain”, it is generally accepted amongst the motoring press that Daihatsu hold that accolade. I was first made aware of the claim because I saw the very same vehicle at a show back in the mid 80's so included it in a magazine article I was writing at the time.

In fact I just found the following, the very car I am referring to:-

http://www.classic-car-buyer.co.uk/news/news-archive/132-daihatsu-withdraw-from-uk.html

Also I tried to Google "Tukuri car" and amazingly nothing popped up at all. What source did you use?

You spotted the deliberate mistake, it was the Montero, not the Monterey.

Thought i would throw the Santa Ana in as a trick question to seperate the knowledgeable from the guesses.

The Tukuri is from my extensive library, which is extensive and often on loan to many motoring museums around the world and is a veritable source of information gained from 30 years of collecting old motoring books. Many are obsolete and many are very rare but they contain nearly every manufacturer and models they produced in the world market, they also dispel many fallacies such as Daihatsu being the first Japanese importer to import to the UK.

Who would have thought of a steam car being imported.

As an aside i have just obtained the missing Rolls Royce official service manuals for the latest models so i have a full set for every model made now.

Over 100,000 rare motoring books, most found by accident in charity shops or obscure places such as car boots and garage sales, and literature from almost every car manufacturer in the world, books and catalogues from component manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers, and fortunately a very large library at home.

The other half has spent about two years cataloguing them on the computer and she is about two thirds of the books, then she has all the other literature to start on.
