i am sure there is some agricultural thing that was made to do that fits on the wheel and some sort of came and as the wheel went around it pushed spikes into the ground scratching chin

I've seen one produced for Land Rover-sized wheels in the 80's. They were plastic, orange in colour, about the width of a LR wheel, which utilised your existing wheel nuts to bolt on to your wheels. Basically they looked like the wheels on a paddle steamer, and in deep mud or a bog acted in much the same fashion.

Did the job quite well, but the bulkiness storage-wise was probably enough to kill off the concept.
