My mk1 Shoguns Empty
PostSubject: My mk1 Shoguns   My mk1 Shoguns EmptyMon Mar 16, 2015 4:38 am

I have owned a mk1 Shogun for a while now, and a couple weeks back my head was turned by an ebay listing. A rare beast, a mk1 canvas top. I have seen a couple of Pajeros and a Montero in this form but never in this country.
It was obvious the person selling it viewed it as a project, the photos where not great either! Luckily I got in early and just made him an offer that was succesfull (luckily as I was within £100 of being unable to spare the money) I've just moved house and it has consumed everything pretty much!
Sorted out the tax and insurance over the next couple of days in preperation for the 280 mile round trip.

The drive back was uneventful, these have real character and spending time in them and driving them is somewhere between a Landcruiser 40 and 70 series. It was invigorating with no roof but fun, the hot smells reminded me of driving my old Landys with the backs rolled up.

So far so good.

PostSubject: Re: My mk1 Shoguns   My mk1 Shoguns EmptyMon Mar 16, 2015 5:06 am

About the truck, Its a very basic spec, vinyl seats and flooring and windy windows, no rear seats have ever been fitted, but it has central locking and air conditioning!  It is officially a Shogun, even on the V5.  From what I can make out it was brought in as a one off order by Mitsubishi as it has a lot of Pajero parts and everything is in Japanese.  It has the Turbo Intercooler engine and 5 speed box.

My first job was to inspect the truck.

Fault list is not bad at all. Front prop shaft uj's in a bad way and the rear will need attention soon. A front damper leaking and some excessive play in one front wheel bearing and that about it.

The whole underside needs to be cleaned and protected properly.  It has a couple areas that have been welded but to a reasonable standard.

So I know I have a good solid base, I will now be gently sorting it to suit my needs.  It will be used for fun on the road and off, some events and travelling in mostly the UK.  I like driving these so much I may use it for the commute to work quite a lot (edit, already used it twice for this)

I will of course be changing all liquids and the belts etc but that's boring!

I will add photos soon, you will see that the roof was in desperate need of attention.  Rather than being a full roof it is like a tonneu cover and then a rear window for the cab.
Luckily I saved an old soft top from a Fiat when I changed it.  I have mated it up to the back of the cab using the bead on the edge of the canvas and the channel on the body so it slides in like you would a caravan awning. then a couple of securing bolts across the top.  Im waiting for a couple of bits to turn up so I can Finnish this, but I trimmed the tonneu down and it does a good job, you keep warm and dry and it can be removed by one person in a minute or two.

After another lucky find, I managed to get an alloy bumper/roo bar and fitted that this morning.  Also while I was there removed the front anti roll bar.  The front part of the bash guard is missing but now the new bumper is in place I can make something that will do the job well. Next weekend I will have some more bits to fit.

Sounds good, never seen a mk1 soft top only mk2s. quite fancied a mk1 for a while now but have a few Delicas a Jeep and a Landrover Series 3 resto so may be a while before I hand over any cash for one.

Would love to see some photos

Smile That is how I am with Delicas, very curious and would like to have one, but no idea when I might get one. Don't want to get back to the stage where I have so many projects none seem to progress. This one is the fastest I've ever managed to achieve anything!

I used to fit out the rear of my trucks for storage etc then have lots of extras but I just have everything in Peli's or Zarges boxes so everything is just ready to go with whatever vehicle we use.

Isn't always the way? It doesn't seem to matter if you're into Land Rovers, Jap or Jeep, one is never enough.

If you end up with a collection like the one found in France recently, then you (or rather your relatives when you peg it) will be quids in.

Hi Everyone,
Gr,eat looking Mk1 soft top.
I had one for about 4 years back in 2007,mine was found in a lock up garage in Welwyn Garden City as a non runner. I'd already got a mk1 Shogun and was browsing the old "LOOT" newspaper when saw the soft top advertised for £300.
When i got it home and in the daylight it did look poorly. The soft top wasn't ripped but very old and tired.
My plans were to use it as a donor car for my existing mk1, however I decided to get the soft top back on the road !!!
I took roof off and also the hoops etc to make it look like the old sj410 Suzuki.I changed the bonnet for one from a diesel mk1 as this had the bonnet bulge vent. I also wound up the front torsion bars as far as they would go and fitted Grizzly Claw off road tyres, 31.10 R15 (I THINK?) that had a really aggressive tread pattern that looked great apart from terrible road noise.
As i had removed the roof i had blue canvas cover made for above the cab and down behind the front seats - i removed rear seats completely.

I loved the car to bits and wanted to know a little of its history so spoke to Customer Services for Mitsubishi but to be honest not expecting much......BUT a great customer sales guy found out the following :

1984 COLT SHOGUN MK1 - CANVAS TOP - COLOUR BLUE - 2.6 PETROL -REG A753PYA
The car was given to a gentleman who won top salesperson of the year back in the old days, he subsequently gave it to his wife as it was too "girlie" for him !!!
And yes, it was badged as a COLT and not Mitsubishi same as on the V5 - and given the proper title of canvas top not soft top.
I have never seen another in the UK at that time. I saw a couple of mk1 Pajeros and a Montero whilst in France.
Sold her back in 1994/95 as rust had set in.
I have a few photos when I took it off road at Devils Pit 4x4 course in Bedfordshire.

Anyway, love yours and if you still have it and you want to sell then let me know as soon as....i have cash waiting !!!!
Kind regards
Kevin (North Herts)

Hi, that was a response I was not expecting. Would love to see some photos if possible. An A reg Colt is the stuff of myths and dreams to myself and a couple of other people I know.

I have no plans or desire to sell mine, but should the need ever arise I will let you know as I would only let it go to an enthusiast of course.

We would like to hear all about it!

Interestingly, one of the members mentioned seeing a blue one a few years back, must be the same one.
There is now a black Pajero soft top in the country recently in from Japan.

Not updated for a while.
Still got the Canvas top and the grey one.
Last year I bought an extra one, again a 2.6 petrol swb.
My mk1 Shoguns 12178209_871243106292950_570419097_n_zpshcci8boi

We used it for a couple of trips, well loaded but performed very well on road and off.

I then made a decision I still regret, I sold it.

Its a 3.0 auto with cruise control and aircon, we have used it for a few road trips now and it eats up the miles.

The canvas top is currently undergoing an engine rebuild. A very unlikely set of circumstances led to me finding a very rare part for this.

I have been looking around for a project, and after being patient I was lucky enough to find this...
My mk1 Shoguns 13940106_1036221583128434_1094388409_o_zpsq6fndhqo

Its a 1983 Y reg Colt Shogun. Built in Jan 1983, one of the very first for the UK. Its the oldest one I know off. I have a fair bit of work to do on it. I will be doing a build thread on Retro Rides, I will post a link here once progress is under way.

Me, I love my Range Rovers, but ... did I mention I used to have a Mk.1 high top? It was massive inside, a 4x4 van if you like. Gearbox packed up in the end, unfortunately the cost just wasn't worth the outlay. Had some fun in that motor.

I have always wanted a DX estate van. its the ultra basic high top, leaf sprung vinyl seated and no carpeted workhorse of the JDM range. I have a brochure with one in, with the PTO winch and extra fuel tank. If i had a time machine that would be on my list.

Shame about yours, I have several spare boxes but have not yet needed one in any of mine. The prices seem to be on the up now for them. I paid under a grand for my first project one a few years back. But recently have had to pay a bit more to get the best ones.
