Tubes or tubeless? Empty
PostSubject: Tubes or tubeless?   Tubes or tubeless? EmptyThu Jul 30, 2015 9:07 am

Hi Guys,
I am currently doing a rebuild on my truck, the wheels are in need of a repaint or powder-coat, I have been running Michelin xzl's, BFG All Terrain and now General at2 on Land Rover heavy duty tubed rims, and would get a fair few punctures. My other truck has been running XZL's on tubeless rims for a couple of years now and i have had a massive reduction in punctures. what do people prefer for overland travel, tubes or tubeless? now seems like a good time to find out peoples opinion, before I spend any cash/energy on refurbishing what I already have.
The vehicle that they are fitted to is a Defender 110 CSW.
Any opinions would be more than welcome.

cheers
Louis

Tubes or tubeless? Empty

Due to modern materials and improved tyre construction methods tubeless are the way to go and companies such as Cooper have led the way in this area with their Armor series of off road tyres using Kevlar to reinforce tyres. Many other premium brand tyres are following suit and still playing catch up. Both have pro's and con's.

Tubeless tyres are filled with air and this seats them better on the rims than tubed tyres.

Tubed tyres rely on the tube filling the entire void of the tyre and research shows they tube isn't wholly successful in this respect.

Tubed tyres can run with some debris inside them and it does no to little harm to the tyre so refitting one to a rim which is deflated or fitted in the bush is likely to suffer.

Tubed tyres have to be spotless as any debris between the tube and tyre bursts the tube.

Tubeless tyres have greater control at higher pressures through no movement except for tyre flex and more flex for traversing rough terrain at lower pressures.

Tubed tyres always have more flex at higher speeds as both they tyre flexes and the tube moves.

My opinion is tubeless and buy a good armoured brand, take a couple of spare tubes as well and you have the best of both worlds.

That should have read

Thank you, I think that pretty much confirms what I thought.
Many thanks
