Hi all,

I'm new here and to Overlanding but not to off roading. I'm looking for a new vehicle and am currently leaning towards a pick up (Hilux, Navara, Ranger) as it'll be more practical for me day to day. Any thoughts on this type of vehicle vs a more traditional SUV-type vehicle?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome! cheers

For me there would be no contest, the Hilux stands head and shoulders above every pick-up I can think of. Tried and tested, it's a great all-rounder and am always amazed how well they perform off-road. Good solid vehicles.

Hi Tommy, welcome to the forum.

I drive a double cab pick up and really like it for the amount of space and load carrying capacity it has in the back, much better than the SUV type 4x4s I have had in the past. Only down side for me is no boot to put the dog in so it travels in the passenger foot well.

Don't think anyone would argue that the Hilux would be the best choice pick up for traveling anywhere in the word given their reliability and therefore how common they are and easily fixed anywhere.

However I chose a Ford Ranger as I needed a vehicle to be my daily drive and as a commuting vehicle I much prefer it over the Hilux I had in the past. I like it so much I have just ordered another one as a replacement.

Thanks guys,

I've had a Ranger in the past too. Never had an issue with it off-road and only had to put it in 4wd about 3 times.

The pick ups would suit me because I can always get one of the motorbikes on the back if I needed to. I just wondered what the downsides were versus an SUV-type...sounds like there are no major issues.

Now to go shopping! cheers1
