Vehicle plus safari trailer....planning a trip South Africa to Kenya....any advice out there as to whether the Outlander will be OK for trip and camping in Kenya? So far the forum only discusses hardcore vehicles. Any advice from anyone who has done this stretch most welcome.

Hi Roseringer ... welcome!  cheers

The reason that it appears we only talk about "hardcore vehicles" is because there are some pretty gruesome roads on the way to somewhere like Kenya, so if you want the vehicle to arrive in one piece, then a dedicated 4x4 (that's a 'proper' 4x4 with good ground clearance, not a glorified all-wheel-drive estate car) is the right motor for the job.

I'm not for a second saying an Outlander coundn't make it, it's atogether possible, but a vehicle with better ground clearance such as a Land Rover, Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol or Isuzu Trooper stands a far better chance. Also, if for any reason your vehicle were to brake down, the aforementioned vehicles are much easier for bush mechanics to fix than an ultra modern Outlander.

Just my view of course, others may think differently.

Incidentally, why did you mention the Outlander in the first place, is it because you already own one or did somebody recommended one?

Actually the Outlander is a pretty good soft roader and with appropriate driving would make it, particularly if it is diesel. Tom has already mentioned the problems and there are some solutions, suspension lifts with uprated springs are available but would need importing from the Asian countries where they are a popular off roader.

If it is your main vehicle I personally wouldn't risk it, this is why most of us have them as a second vehicle, or have them as a primary vehicle with a smaller secondary vehicle, this gives several advantages, you can prepare and load your vehicle over time to pack it correctly as rushed packing means you always forget something you want or need, how often to people throw in their cookers and forget the lighter or matches. Piezo ignition is great until it goes wrong, then you need matches or a lighter. It is these types of problem which slower packing overcomes.

Thank for the input.....and comment re primary vehicle and the wisdom of prepping the vehicle for the journey ahead of time. We went camping this passed weekend - and experienced exactly the scenario of quick packing that you mention! Left without three or four items that were essential. Luckily fellow campers helped us out.

You're welcome, this is what the site is for, the question remains what would you do if you are on your own without fellow campers.

If you have the funding it may be appropriate to look at the option of a second dedicated vehicle, they aren't that expensive if you only tax them for 6 months or chip the tax disc in when you have done your trip, you can stand it and only MOT it annually and insure it solely as an expedition vehicle as a second vehicle which gives you several months of use and gives insurance at a discounted rate when it is standing. Many vehicles exist and as someone who is not a Land Rover fan I wouldn't suggest one, many on the site have a wide range of vehicles ranging from old Vauxhall Fronteras to my Mitsubishi Shogun. By buying an older vehicle you can do it as a project as it is a cheap vehicle and as long as the major components are sound you can modify and adapt it from the savings you make by buying an older vehicle, and get exactly what you want as you gain experience.

Some suggestions would be:

Daihatsu Fourtrak - rough, tough old beast which has a poorish ride quality on road, and is prone to rust, but if you can weld or have access to someone who can weld you can transform one of these reliable vehicles as they are so tough and it will last for years, simple mechanicals and mend in the field ability.

Nissan Patrol - cost more than a Fourtrak but is larger and has more equipment as standard, good rough tough vehicle with plenty of off the shelf mods available, longer than a Fourtrak and they often ground due to ramp breakover angle and a little underpowered with the latest 3.0L FIRE engine, but good driving and familiarity will overcome this.

Toyota - Various options about, good reliable vehicle with reasonable running costs, cost less or more than a Patrol depending on type and age, but good mods available off the shelf.

You could opt for a 4X4 pick up with a hardtop, Toyota and Mitsubishi are the leaders, plenty of space, crew cab options available.
