110 aux fuel tank

Hi
Has anyone fitted one of these 45 litre extra fuel tank to a 110 CSW in the rear quarter panel that goes in the filler neck line?

How easy are they to fit with reference to the cutting of the filler pipe and can you get on to the hose clips on the pipe between the main tank and the aux tank and the filler neck and aux tank to do the clips up?

Do they all use this banjo bolt in the drain bung to fill the main tank or is there another way to get the fuel into the main tank (I am a bit worried about catching it off road and ripping it out of the main tank?

Hi there,
yep I've got one of those tanks which I bought from Foleys.

The only things that need cutting is the fuel filler hose (easily done) and the filler itself, again an easy job to get right.

The wide bore part of the filler hose needs to be cut off to join the two tanks together and this is where I had the first and only problem with my tank. With the tank bolted in the outlet from the aux tank was below the level of the filler of the main tank. This meant that the short length of large bore pipe had to go through a tortuous path (an S bend) and so getting a good grip with the jubilee clips was difficult. I tried and failed to get a longer piece of pipe in the UK and Australia so I eventually bit the bullet and paid a man to reweld the outlet higher up on the tank - hey presto problem solved.

If like me you have smallish hands then all of the pipes and bolts are easyish to get to as the tank does not fit flush to the underneath of the wing.

I was worried about the link pipe going to the drain hole but as I was going to fit a Southdown tank guard anyway it wasn't a problem. I made a guard to protect the pipe outboard of the chassis to the aux tank which bolts onto the anti roll bar bracket.

So there are not very many out there then, is there a better aux tank to fit eg sill tanks?

You could fit a larger tank and replace yours, or fit a second tank underneath the vehicle, there are plenty on the market to choose from.

Alternatively you could have a custom made tank to fit under the vehicle.

or use a land rover 90 tank under the drivers seat
cheap, even at the cost of a new tank,
series miliatary tanks also good except they fill up under the seat so it would probley stink of diesel.

getting one of those larger standard tanks is all well and good but have you seen just how far they hang down! more of a disadvantage I would say.

Yes, selecting the correct sized tank is crucial to prevent excessive depth which reduces ground clearance, and the reason i suggested a bespoke item to fully fit the space.

We have a 120 litre main tank fitted to one of our 110.

Now the exhaust pipe would be squashed first assuming an even across width of vehicle departure angle. Which would mean lack of motion until a Hacksaw had been deployed

Except with rear bumperettes fitted and even across width of vehicle departure angle the rear bumperettes will take the impact




Except with a 2" receiver fitted that also protects the tank. More so if plough is fitted




Now since our tanks are double skinned on bottom, i.e. 4mm of stainless steel, that would take some penetrating!


Guess what, our wing tanks are double bottom as well!


Oh yes we do use them on rough roads/off road.

So what is the real danger to a good quality well made large fuel tank? Stepping of a vertical drop onto a solid spike of metal or rock. This danger can be diminished by use of Mk 1 eyeballs and an engaged brain.


A wing tank is a flow through system so is simple in principle

Sill/pod tanks or use of seat tanks means use of divertor vales, extra pumps etc.

By the way to best of my knowledge Southdown no longer make tank guards and have not done so for a number of years.

Each to their own as they say, for my personal use that would hang down too far,

did you have to make any modifications to refit the anti roll bar?
i have seen them fitted in the past where it either has to be removed or have new brackets fitted

Thanks for all the feed back, this is where I am at now at after talking to far to many people on the phone etc.

Tried an old spare 90 tank and it will not fit up in to the space under the seat in the CSW did cut the filler neck off first and removed the tool box. (So can get one made to similar size to fit)

Like the rear wing tanks but do not like the little drain pipe that go in the bottom of the tank, looks like it might get snapped off if I was to catch it, then both tanks are empty.

Big 120 lts tank (thanks for the picas) is good but not sure about how low it is and the company I talked to said that they did not do a tank guard for it and the tow bar might not fit with it on. But I still like that one might follow when my main tank rusts out.

Sill tank on the right hand side I liked but as I have got rid of my tool box under the seat all ready it seems like a waste of space stopping so low. So I think I am going to get a sill tank make up with a under seat filler (so I can get inside it if need be and also to fill up if the transfer pump packs up) and have a 90 fuel sender unit in there so I know what’s in the tank. (Instead of guessing how much fuel I have because it is only another gauge or just a switch over switch on the sender line to tell)

Is this about right or have I missed so thing along the way?
Will try and get some pics of the work being done.

How many people have you spoken to have wing tanks fitted? How many of those people have had problems?

Besides long trips we also do RTV's. Guess what? Yep no problems at all. If I had a concern about things like that I would hardly travel as a solo vehicle in remote desert areas!

A double bottomed stainless tank 4mm thick with vertical baffles in will take some damaging! Tow bar? Use 2" receiver, no problems.

It has been a long time but in the end when for a new 90 tank under the driver seat.
Fill the rear tank then pump it to the front tank and run off that one all the time.
Works great.
Might still put rear wing tank in as well soon, just borrowed one off a friend to copy.

As you say, always the option of adding yet more capacity. Planning a trip across the Sahara are we? You are clearly anticipating on one hellava distance between fuel stops, either that or just wanting to fill up in Andorra as it's cheap!

Andorra is on the list of places to go.
Just like to have the back up of more fuel than i need.

Fair enough, although more fuel on board means more fuel being burnt. Oh the irony!
