Hi all

I am an, as yet unreconstructed, motorbike traveller who is looking at the possibility of returning to the Americas and possibly Africa on 4 wheels rather than 2 idea

I am hoping to pick up lots of useful information at the HUBBUK meeting in Donington next year but I would be interested in knowing what is the collective wisdom of the forumees (if such a word exists doh ) on the following:

What vehicle/s (definitely not new affraid )should I consider (budget say £5000) for travelling through South America and Africa? I am thinking here particularly of reliability, economy, ease of repair and maintenance.

What are essential upgrades to expeditionise (made up word again!) the vehicle?

Petrol or diesel?

Does anyone have recent experience of costs to freight 4x4 vehicle to either North or South America?

Any observations would be appreciated. Thanks.

hi and welcome, it will come down to your choice, that's what is good about this forum, many people many motors, all will have good and bad points.

Whatever vehicle you eventually go for, a big factor is whether you want to sleep inside, alongside or on top of it. Okay, for £5,000 you aren't going to pick up a demountable camper, but cost-wise purchasing a decent quality roof-rack and roof-tent will set you back a few bob on their own, so sleeping inside or a ground tent would leave you more for purchasing the actual vehicle.

I realise you're asking us, but you must have some preferences already?

Hey there, welcome.

I shipped a 110 Landrover over from Calgary, Canada about a year ago. The cost was about $6000 Canadian (£4000). But Calgary is waayyy out west. I am sure shipping to Halifax on the east coast of a U.S. port would be significantly cheaper.

As for a vehicle, especially in your price range, go for something with minimal electronics would be my advice. It is going to be older and mechanical bits can be relatively easy to repair but ageing complicated electronics can be a major headache.

It also depends on whether you are a 'road cruiser' following the highways or an off-roader who will be trying to bash his way to the more remote areas....or a balance of the two.

Lastly I would say for whatever vehicle you choose, find one that has good aftermarket product support. You don't really need every gizmo and fancy bit of kit, but a few solid, reliable mods can make your experience much more enjoyable.

Hi Tom

After many years of "ground camping" this time I am considering a wee bit more comfort Laughing Roof tent is probably the way to go and I know that this will cost a few, or more, shekels affraid My arbitrary £5000 will be just for the basic vehicle with upgrading and "expeditionising" costs as extra. I should also have mentioned that my wife will be also be travelling so the vehicle only needs to accommodate two people.

I am no mechanic and therefore reliability is very important. All vehicles can fail but perhaps some more than others (to misquote George Orwell!) Each vehicle has their devotees (and detractors!) and informed advice from those who have "been there, done that" would be invaluable.

I think you really only have two choices make-wise:-

Toyota 70 series 1984–present ... or Toyota 60 series 1980–1990 if you want more room

or

Land Rover Defender 110 1983-present (1990's model would be fine)

All of these are available in diesel or petrol, so depends where you're off to cost-wise.
