As it happens, somebody mentioned about Unicats just after this forum was started. I've even got the same photo I downloaded at the time -

Nice vehicle, but whether it's practical in the real world is another matter entirely -

Much as I like the look of the big expedition trucks, even with unlimited funds I still would opt for something a lot smaller. How much room do you want in a camper? A place to cook, a basin to wash and wash-up, somewhere to sit to eat and chat (4 seats minimum so you can have friends around when it's cold or chucking it down outside, a bed and a porta-potty for 'emergencies' when a loo isn't available. Size matters when touring, I reckon overland vehicles can be too big!

I love it.

Im a huge fan of old Russian Trucks like the Ural 6x6 and this thing looks sweet. But Tom said it all really, how will you fit it down a street, let alone a green lane?
But then I suppose if your out touring a Russian Swamp or the Eygptian Desert, this is not going to matter. Need a real big wallet tho....

Hmmm...see the world...one millimeter at a time.

I think the only way the big vehicles would work for me is as a "live-on-board." Sell the house, sell the furniture and head out on the road...preferrably someplace like the Americas or Africa where space isn't an issue. Tow a small Jeep, Landie or similiar behind you and use the land yacht as a base camp. There are lots of people who live this way in North America...in big Winnibegos moving with the sun and climate.

You say "Wow!" but that glacier crossing was nothing to virtually all 6x6 and 8x8 vehicles. Providing the base is rocky, they take that sort of crossing in their stride. Think he was just taking his time simply to advertise his Ice Expolorer a little longer on YouTube! Got his sussed. Wink

Bit more action going on here. Started watching, couldn't stop until the bitter end!

It's not just the size which makes the difference in small villages and on mountain roads with overhanging rock walls but what happens when you get stuck in mud or sand?

You'll need to spend a lot more time digging to get it out or need a bigger truck to pull you out.

Still good to see. Really surprised the steel cable survived the ordeal.

While some of those vehicles are truly awesome, most are simply too big.

THIS is what I would like (when I win the lotto Laughing )

http://www.earthcruiser.com.au/specifications

The standard one is designed to fit in a 20ft container!!!!

meanwhile, in the real world it is more likely to be;

Just remember with bigger vehicles you do yourself out of some routes

Anyone see Peter Critchons talk including the crossing of the br319 in brazil. He made it fine in the discovery, as did a friend of mine in an Iveco

But a Unimog was too heavy for one of the bridges and it collapsed as they drove onto it (i'm sure you remember the news reports)

Other thing is fuel consumption of larger vehicles , my 4.5 tonne iveco does about the same as a landy or cruiser, larger vehicles will cost you alot more fuel, therefore you need to carry more for the same range......

The Mitsubishi Canter 4X4 is a sturdy vehicle and has compact dimensions which has endeared it to many expedition converters worldwide.

Add in the inherent reliability and excellent fuel consumption and its up there with the best.
