Received an email from the organisers, thought I'd pass it on ...

Go Help and the London Ambulance Service (LAS) have partnered together to drive six ambulances on the epic Mongolia Charity Rally, a road trip from London to the ancient Mongol capital of Ulaanbaatar.

A Marathon of Madness! The Mongolia Charity Rally is 10,000 miles of pot-holes, bandits, strange borders, deserts, mountain ranges and locals with eagles for pets, and it's the only rally to Mongolia all for charity!

Kicking off in London on July 9, 2011, you'll be working your way across tracks and tarmac to the ancient Mongol capital of Ulaanbaatar to support UK registered charity Go Help!

If you’re interested you need to let the organisers know by March 13th.

I went to the start line last year in Longleat. Took some shots and tried to submit them with a few words to some magazines, no joy unfortunately. Shame as they had no less than four Land Rover ambulances that various teams were driving to Mongolia and leaving there by way of donation. Seems a mad yet rewarding event.

I did the Mongol Rally in 2007 - it was great - but I would not do an "organised" rally again - it has become quite expensie now IMHO.

Will be fun taking an ambulance across. Not sure why the organisers are promoting it as such though....because the NHS are doing the interviews for the rally to take their ambulances (not sure if it is restricted to NHS only staff, but I know that NHS staff have ben interviewed)...it's not a case of reply to an email and wahey you might get an ambulance (interviews have already taken place).

What? The Landy Rally Euro Charity Drive is very good value (well, as organiser I'm obliged to say that ) @ £860 for a crew of two. And that includes a couple of rally plaques, t-shirts, camping fees, a couple of communal meals, off-roading fees at Val d’Isère, the prize-giving dinner, trophies and cash prizes.

This goes a long way to explain why it will be the last Landy Rally this September ... it's too cheap! Thing is I had always intened the event as being a 'jolly up' for all those taking part whilst doing a bit of good for others, so never wanted it to be over-priced. Time to move on though to pastures new.

I'd love to drive to Mongolia, but I'd say you really need the time to undertake such a journey, it is after all an awfully long way! The 3,000 miles of Landy Rally is enough for me!!!

Not doubting that organised rallies are good value for many - but for me it is a waste when I can sort it myself for cheaper. £860 would seem like a bargain for many for the Euro drive and well worthit, but for me, that's a lot of fuel re-fills!

You don't need that long to go to Mongolia - 5 weeks is more than enough if you get a shift on

We got to Mongolia via Kazakhstan (8500 miles) in just over 3 weeks in a 1.0 Litre Suzuki SJ - and we had quite a few days lost due to breakdowns and the last few days we taken very slowly as we didn't really have any suspension, steering or brakes. We rarely exceeded 50MPH and our average speed was probably less than half of that in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. If you go back the direct route through Russia, can be done in 9 days we have been informed if you don't stop very much.

So yeah, I would say a return trip is more than possible in 5 (OK, lets say 6) weeks - and certainly easy in a more reliable/faster vehicle

Coil springs would be good. I value my fillings, so going back to cart-springs isn't an option. :o

I think my leafer is quite comfortable!

I used to think that when I had my SIIA Lightweight, then I found Range Rovers, never looked back!

Been in Range Rovers as well over the rough stuff. At speed, I think the Series is more comfy/re-assuring over the rough stuff. And the Rangie was awful over corrugated tracks! The suspension just could not react in time, whilst in the series, because it did not react at all, we barely felt it!

But yeah, RR is certainly comfier in most situations!

I also like the fact you can kill the shock absorbers on a leafer and it does not make too much difference...kill the shocks on a coiler and boing boing boing...funny to watch but not much fun for the occupants!
