One of the most frequent questions I hear or get asked is: What type if tyre is better suited for a 4x4?

A Thinner tyre, or a Wider tyre?

I think this deserves a Poll. I know that they type of terrain and vehicle can vary but what do YOU think is the best overall?

Feel free to add comments or opinions below.

From my point of view, tyres are one of the most effective things to change in order to make your Vehicle better off road or on it.

When I got AT's for my Terios I changed from 235/60/16's to 215/70/16's as the stock tyres actually rubbed on full lock!
Now I have tyres with a slightly larger diameter which perform really well in the rough stuff.
I believe that most modern vehicles are actually overshod - they are sold with tyres wider than needed jmust 'cos it looks cool. Also I have found that needlessly wider tyres are no help in snow especially.
But this is just my opinion

VW Beetles are amazing in the snow. The combination of the rear engine and thin tyres take some beating. Drove one in Kent one particularly bad winter, it was awesome, the only other vehicles moving were Series Land Rovers - well it was an awfully long time ago.

Also donkey's years ago, I once encountered a blizzard - a complete white out actually - on a French Autoroute in Normandy whilst driving a convertible Triumph Herald. Brand new Merc's with their standard 'fat tyres' were falling by the wayside completely stuck, but my ol' Herald on skinnys not only keep going on the flat, but even climbed the off-ramp to the safety of a village.

That village with tempreatures of -18 degrees at night was snowed in for 4 days! Always did wonder what happened to the drivers of those Mercs???
