| Blimey, more than 800,000km (500,000 miles) on the clock - the equivalent of 20 times around the planet and has never had a serious breakdown in his Merc? Fair play, can't argue with that.

| amazing trip! Sad about his wife though and you can really tell from the photos how he's aged. Bet he's got a few tales to tell. I wonder how they financed this? did they sell a house or something? | |

Have to be a damn big house OK lets try and do the maths What do you need per month - 1000USD ? - 1500 USD ? remember no hotels, no restaurants and probabily minimal beers / wine Shipping - every time say 5000 usd ? carnet costs and deposits ? emergency fund ? insurance costs every year (medical etc)? I've conveniently ignored the fact that both vehicles were probabily quite new if not new at the start of the trips Now if you had property to rent out then thats probabily a better business model a trip like this So if you could raise a UK income of say 20k a year it might be do-able. Travel slowly and that helps the costs (less borders, less shipping) Any more thoughts ? | |

| funny ,,,me and management were talking about this not so long ago,,,,, we reckon if you werent doing a lot of miles per day-week-month and could manage on say a tank of fuel a month then a basket of food a week at about 40euros thats all we spend each week,,,,,,,then all your other little bits and pieces,,,,we reckoned about 500 euros a month. try it then compensate,,,,,, | |

| That I guess assumes you could wild camp all the time
so say 80 litres of fuel (assuming a stanard tank rather than my oil tanker) - whats a good general fuel usage for a big loaded 4x4 - 12-14 litres per 100km
So that may give you 600-800km of range
So pottering along at 200km a week
May work.
So if you can raise 500 Euros from renting out your house.......

| Ah that sounds good to me (where exactly in tarrifa ? ) Just in the process of pre-inherriting a house so will have rental income from that soon and the GF's house will be rented out soon too (although that will really just pay for itself). So if we could then get someone to house sit for my place we will be set So see you on the road living cheaply | |

| Just been talking to a friend of mine, long term overlander - he says it costs them about £800 a month (50 USD a day)
Thats covering good distances but not eating out. Food bought from markets , supermarkets but good quality and they eat what they want.
This doesn't include shipping etc but does cover other incidentals (ferrys, minor vehicle repairs and servicing)
