| Hi are P38's as bad as alot people make out or do they just have a press saw a nice looking one, when out in France and generally there was quite a lot about as well as some nice classics. Generally would they make a good overlander or am being deluded? Cheers Del | |

| The LR garage I used to use in Newcastle, were a real friendly bunch and always did a good job. I was talking to the bloke about selling my 110 and said I really like the look of the P38 and he said well if you buy one it will break and don't bring it here.
A can of worms it seems.
So not great for an overlander.

| RR are generally unreliable vehicles which do break down a lot, and this is the reason many people avoid them. This said, they are fairly easy to repair, parts are cheap, and they are good offroad. Virtually every country in the world has a RR expert never too far away.
Many vehicles are much better, Mitsubishi and Toyota with their Shogun and Land Cruiser models are excellent vehicles with exceptional reliability, Nissan are not far behind these two witheir Patrol. All would make excellent overland vehicles as they all have excellent internal space, plenty of scope to modify them, and an excellent aftermarket spares and accessories availibility.

| Let's not get confused and call the P38 a genuine RR.
There aren't many left in this country let alone 3rd world countries and this is because of the dire electrical components that were put in it.

| The last of the true off-road Range Rovers ended with the introduction of the P38. Don't get me wrong, I have seen P38's and generations that have followed do some pretty amazing stuff off-road, but as a long term vehicle, take a wide berth around all Range Rovers ... apart from the Classic of course. Electronics are key to the problem, something which fortunately the Classic does not posses a lot of. Apart from a basic ECU in the later models, it's all more or less basic electrics. Of what it seems, the BMW diesel used in the P38 is also a bit of a mare, another reason to leave well alone. A French friend of mine swears by his P38, then again he has pots of money to chuck at it so it's not a problem to him. Have you a bottomless pit Chally? | |

| I wouldn't say deluded, actually the opposite as looking at ALL your options is the only way to arrive at an informed decision. | |

Its got 4WD, traction control, a CD player and air con, and semi automatic transmission. Nice try, but it would only qualify if you could take your kids to school in Fulham less than 1/2 a mile away.

| We have had alot of P38's as part exchanges over the years. 90% of them were the diesels. Small diesel output engines, suffering with acceleration even unladen and woeful towing ability coupled largely with electrical problems, we often sold them for parts or scrap. The Larger 4.0 models I thought were better, it towed alot better but still was abit sluggish when compared to similar petrol sized engines from other brands. Refinement and comfort was high. If you have the technical aptitude and patients then why not get one. To me, from a practical point of view, you will need a wallet the size of a clowns pocket to keep up with either the cost of fuel or repairs.
