Always hated the seats and driving position of the Defender, what you've done certainly solves that problem. Far more 'user friendly'. thumbsup

For me - I'm afraid that despite all the skimming, pressure-testing, etc. after a head gasket fail, once I lose confidence in an engine, it's time for it to go. Okay, in your case it will be the entire vehicle, but I see an engine change as the only way to go, otherwise it can be a case of 'throwing good money after bad'. No

DJ:

If I may offer a word of advice, the G wagon is one of those vehicles with lots of problems mainly due to the fact they are mainly company owned and worked very hard and often run into the ground. Many companies bought them for a specific use and they are used predominantly off road and with MB servicing costs being so high many companies used cheaper sources for servicing, due to this and their use many are knackered to the point that putting them right often costs so much more then buying new.

They also have a number of inherent problems which are springs, shocks, transfer cases, electronics various, and corrosion, and the newer the model the worse they seem to be.

Hey Jim, not that it means that much as this assent could very well be down to the driver, but it's interesting nevertheless -

Assassin has a point. If a major component like a transfer box were to let go, I'd hate to think how much something like that would set you back. Just not enough about, at least with a Landy you have a fighting chance of a cheap(ish) repair.

True, but it's the old story. Older vehicles like the G-Wagen (all vehicles actually) are great when they're working, but should something go wrong ...

Then again, if you have deep pockets, then it really doesn't matter. In this case obviously go for what you fancy and sod the cost!

Trouble is, you not talking about a new G-Wagen vs a new Landy. If the two were pitted against each other from new, mechanically the G-Wagen would almost certainly be the most reliable, but you're talking about an older Merc. Just old enough in fact to have parts start failing.

The Merc's alternator for instance may last twice as long as a Land Rover, but once both motors reach a certain age, they are both as liable as each other to have their alternators give up. That's the way it is. An alternator or starter motor is one thing, a gearbox is quite another.

Time will tell.

The other issue is that G Wagons are worked much harder then the LR as they are designed to work in harsher conditions, and do, and this is where the problems arise.

Been looking for a good Unimog myself and the problems of abuse are the same, try finding a good one which doesn't require major (very expensive) work doing on it.

Again its the question of cost V value.
